Question re: bases for upgrades.

Post by Nemo121 »

From memory San Francisco, Karachi and Osaka are the three bases in the stock game which can give ships upgrades. My query is whether there is any in-game display for this or not?

I'm asking because I'm checking some mods out and it is unclear as to which bases in these mods can upgrade ships. It appears this is hard-coded without any in-game information but I want to check if I'm missing something.

Any base that has a repair shipyard can give upgrades, not just those three... the speed at which they will repair after upgrade will depend on the size of the base and repair shipyard. There is an icon on the base info screen (at the bottom) that shows which ones have shipyards.

You can upgrade at such places as Melbourne, Bombay, Pearl Harbor, etc.

San Fran and Osaka(?) are the only ones that will convert AK to things like ARs, though.

In my game I've had ships upgrade in Pearl Harbor, the three US WC ports, and Sydney.  Melbourne probably upgrades as well but I've not seen it happen yet.

As Robert stated, ships will upgrade in any port that has a shipyard in it. I have had subs upgrade in Aukland in CHS.

Really? Well that IS interesting. This means I can forward-deploy more of the US fleet for its October 42 upgrades in my game against Damian, letting my new offensives roll forward a full two weeks earlier than would otherwise be possible. That's great news.

Thanks guys.

Yes, shipyards are the place for upgrades.  The obvious warning is that if you sail a big TF with lots of ships that are pending upgrade then you may have the whole lot out of action (or at least damaged) for weeks if you don't default to upgrades "off" and carefully control what gets the upgrades.

Nemo,
The places you mentioned (SF. Osaka, and Karachi) are the locations in stock where ships can be converted (AK to AR, AS, etc). IIRC in mods that ability goes to the base occupying that slot. Thus if you put Aden in Karachi's slot it will now have that capability and Karachi will not. As many have said already, upgrades occur at any repair facility.
