You just right click on the engineer. You will see a line in green type towards the bottom of the units stats that says "will clear mines in front of unit." If you click on that line it will toggle between "will place mines in front of unit" and "will not clear mines in front of unit." So, you have 3 choices with engineers; 1) clear; 2) place; or 3) do nothing. I believe they default to "clear mines." This is also the place you change stance to advance or defend. And you can also set the range at which the unit will take Op Fire.

Ciao,

one more thing...

you must purchase the mines in the buy screen if not your engineers have nothing to deploy.

Usually engineers take one turn to place five mines in the hex that they are facing. But only if they are not suppressed or they not take fire from enemy etc...

Sorry, but that's not correct.
You can do it ALSO if you DID NOT buy any mines.
This has been discussed several times and proved to be correct, so I think to be on the safe side affirming this.
But, just in case, you can try yourself and see :)

It is not necessary to "pre buy" mines.
Engineers will deploy regardless of whether you bought the mines or not.
It may make a difference in how fast they lay.

The amount of mines engineers lay per turn is, like the amount they sweep, dependent on suppression and experience.

For example in a british campaign i am playing, all my infantry are sappers. I almost never buy mines (except when i get a defend mission) but in case of counterattack they all start with "lay mines" and they do as told :)

The advantage of buying mines is that you can deploy minefields (in the setup) without engaging engineers. I even suspect that non-laid, bought minefields are as much out of reach as are non planned bought level bombers.

NO, no, no!
If you have engineers you can deploy mines freely!

Just select "place mine in front of the unit" and your engineers will place mines! :D

In my experience, I don't think the engineers will lay mines if they're busy doing something else, e.g. shooting at the enemy. (or do they become automatically suppressed by doing that?)

Anyhoo, I recently tried this out. Had two platoons of engineers deployed in a north-south column. The north platoon fired (without recieving return fire), the south did not.

Soon the south platoon had scores of nice skulls-n-crossbones in front of them. The north platoon had one (1).

Maybe not exactly on topic but has anyone else noticed that the 'hasty' mines kaid during the game are easier to spot. I can't prove it but I think they are. I tried running a test but got bored with it and thought I would try the easy way and ask around.

don't you just love it when your engineer laid one little mine, and the next turn a big ol' enemy tank rolls up and just hits the one and only mine in the hex and blows up? :D
