Just a series of how-to questions

Post by unlistedmoniker »

I'm not sure if I'm missing something in the help section or manual, but the Commander's Edition seems to be missing functionality I had in the old classic original. I.E. I can't click on a unit and find out what armaments are still available vs. expended, what it's range is at any given point, or even what units are making up a group without ording a 'split'in order to see what components are making it up. I don't find a window for it under the menu items either. Even when ordering a split, I don't get a read on individual planes - just 3 of one type, 3 of another, etc. When I've got 7 or 8 groups operating simultaneously, and changing constantly as missions complete and others launch, I can't carry it all in my head. I miss the ability to micro manage a group attack by detaching individual units and creating high/low paired attacks or 180 degree simultaneous approaches, etc. The pop-up staff assistant has also cost me a few units since they can't be ignored for a few seconds while commands to other units in critical situations are issued. Does percentage of Bingo Fuel displayed indicate status for the unit lowest on fuel or an average of all units in the group? Help locating solutions to any of these from those more experienced in the Commander's Edition would be appreciated.

I can't click on a unit and find out what armaments are still available vs. expended,
You can click on the unit in the Unit Window display and then hit [F] for full display. It should show you which weapons are still available and which have been expended (just like in the original game).

or even what units are making up a group without ording a 'split'in order to see what components are making it up.
You can also hit the Formation Editor [F4] command to see what units are in a particular group. Or, you can select the group, hit [C] to centre it in the Unit window display, and then click through the various units within that group.

Welcome back to the game, shipmate. [8D]

Order of Battle command [Ctrl+B] under the Reports menu will also show you the various components of your groups.

Herman has already answered most of your questions, but for completeness ...

I can't click on a unit and find out what armaments are still available vs. expended,

If you click on an aircraft group, the reports window will give you a list of remaining weapons. This is partial information, but it is quickly available and may give you what you need to know, especially if you are familiar with what that group was initially carrying. If you then ask for a "full" report, you will get a little bit more information.
what its range is at any given point,

If you click on an aircraft unit, the reports window will give you partial information on fuel status (the "bingo" value). If you then ask for a "full" report, you will get remaining total range for that aircraft. Sometimes the "active unit display" information does not line up properly, but the number you need is always there.
or even what units are making up a group

To add to Herman's answer, hit "i" to display unit/group IDs.
I miss the ability to micro manage a group attack by detaching individual units and creating high/low paired attacks or 180 degree simultaneous approaches, etc.

You pretty much do need to micromanage many things in Harpoon. Unfortunately, the interface is not that great for it. Pausing the game often may help. Note that just about any command will pause the game.
The pop-up staff assistant has also cost me a few units since they can't be ignored for a few seconds while commands to other units in critical situations are issued.

He wouldn't last too long in the Imperial Klingon Navy.

But bear in mind that the action is paused while the staff assistant is telling you something.
