New v1.080 Public Beta Hotfix Now Available!

Post by Erik Rutins »

Hi Everyone,

A new public beta hotfix is now available for all registered owners of War in the Pacific: Admiral's Edition. You can download this beta update by registering your copy in our Members Club, then going to My Games and clicking on Private Downloads next to the Admiral's Edition entry in the game list.

This addresses the following issues. These fixes will also be in the first official update, but we wanted to get them out sooner as they were affecting gameplay significantly in many cases. We recommend that all customers who are experiencing any interface lag issues upgrade to this update immediately.

- Resolves interface lag issues on some dual core / quad core systems. Improves performance overall on most systems.
- Fixes an issue that could cause TFs moving at cruise speed and full speed to move the same distance
- Fixes an issue with the Guadalcanal scenario where some Allied units were restricted that should not have been

Please not that to get the full performance benefit, you should use the -dual command line switch (see the What's New readme).

Regards,

- Erik

By the way, we'd be happy to hear any feedback on how the performance improvements work on your system. They're a pretty significant upgrade based on our testing.

Just fired up the game after patching and it is significantly faster. It was definitely playable, but if I toggled the road network on I experienced severe slowdown. Scrolling was very sluggish. It is much faster now.
Also I'm playing in windowed mode and the window now comes up much faster after losing focus. Nice job!

Doesn't require a restart unless you were playing Guadalcanal and want those fixes. Otherwise just make sure if you're playing a PBEM that both upgrade to the new exe. The performance improvement and cruise/full speed fixes will work on existing games.

Note that the plan is for the first official update to allow any data fixes to be incorporated into ongoing games without a restart. We are still in the early stages of testing that functionality though and we wanted to get this beta hotfix out more quickly.

Feedback on the performance upgrade:

I was pretty happy with the load times already, but I can see a nice improvement here.
Game loads in about 1 second.
Quite impressive.
And it seems the small delay I've experienced when opening some screens while on the map has been improved too.
So good work!

Is this mainly for dual/quad-core processors etc. or does this improve the performance with older processors too?

Should improve performance on all systems, but the improvement should be quite dramatic for dual/quad core systems.

Erik, I d/l the hotfix and installed it.  I've created a new shortcut to the new .exe and added the -w parameter.  After it started, I checked the affinity of the process, and it has both cpu's checked.  I had been running with the "affinity hack" mentioned in the Tech Support forum, with great results, and it only had one cpu checked.  Have I done something wrong, or should I not see only one cpu checked with the hotfix .exe?

I'll try to test the performance a bit, but I'm at work, so can't do much.  I did think the program start took longer than it has been taking with the hacked version.

Edit: No, switching between windows and then back to the AE window is back to my "pre-affinity hack" lag with the hotfix .exe. The game does show version 1.080 at the top.

Edit 2: I was not experiencing any of the other performance problems related to displays that some had reported, so I can't say if that was impacted by the hotfix for me or not. Right now, AE hotfix runs like WitP always has on my dual core laptop. I am getting used to the quicker performance of the hacked version, though. [;)]

- Fixes an issue that could cause TFs moving at cruise speed and full speed to move the same distance

Since this is happening in my game, which distance was the correct one, pre-patch? (i.e. so i'll know what to expect the next time my TFs travel out at Full and Cruise respectively)
