oob problems with online play?

Post by Richter »

A friend and I tried to play an online game but after everything was set up and ready a message came up that said error with oob #70.
I know 70 is Germany and was wondering if something may have changed in the oob file that we might look at to fix. We both had version 4.3b when we tried to play.

Thanks for your help!

Well we installed version 4.4 and still had the same problem. Guess we need to reinstall the game and try again.

It is possible that you are both not using the same OOB datestamp. I have noticed that opponents around the world have OOB's with a datestamp that appears to be affected by their timezone.
My set is dated 9:13am, an opponent in France 4:13pm and in Greece 5:13pm.
It would be simple for the initiating player to send his OOB list with the starting turn so player 2 can use the same set of OOB's. That worked for me.
Alternatively, you could both download Tankheads 'official' OOB's and play from a "standard" set.
I believe that this timezone quirk is resposible for many failed game starts.
They struggled with a ferocity that was to be expected of brave men fighting with forlorn hope against an enemy who had the advantage of position......knowing that courage was the one thing that would save them.

I think the programmers must find an other way to compare OOBS. Maybe check the size of the file, or even better, make something like a CRC check, read all the file, add all byte by byte, and check if the sums are equal. Or maybe convert the date stamp of the file to GMT and then check if they match.

I'm from Greece, and I only played online with a guy from Finland (same GMT zone).

Thanks Major that was part of the problem. The other was that my oobs did not change when i dloaded the updates. Mine still read 9-08-00. So we both got the standard oobs from Tankheads site and it worked great!!!
