Attacking defensive guns

Post by slick willy »

Any way to target the defensive guns with dive bombers prior to amphib landing? Or do I just do ground attack and play the lottery?

I think you just play the lottery with the units at the base. A bombardment TF will assist greatly too.

I do find that, more often than not, the aircraft do tend to attack the inherent base force. Either the Coastal Defence or Base Force. Also, including some bombardment capable, surface naval units in the actual invasion TF does help quite a lot with suppressing Coastal defence guns as they tend to aim their fire at them first. Reading Combat replays and reports helps with deciphering this.

In WITP, I believe Port Attack was best for disrupting CD guns and maybe engineers too. Don't know if that has changed.

Manual states so for AE also but i had zero luck disabling CD/other guns with Port attack.
I played vs. AI and loaded AI turn to see what happend after bombardment, never managed to disable a single gun...

I found that having cruisers in the amphib force helped, not to the extent I had hoped but it seemed to lower the hits on my transports.
I use the the Omaha class CL's for this mission.

A single bombardment with little or no prior recon will acheive next to nothing - you're firing blind.
One of the changes made in AE was to increase the value of detection levels. If you don't do recon and identify the targets any bombardment or bombing will not hit much. If the target is overstacked then your opponent (human or AI) will be giving you a helping hand.

Don't forget to recon your targets!

Recon
Air Bombing (pick airgroups with higher experince, pick aircraft with the biggest payloads)
Naval Bombard
Repeat!!!

Remember with fog of war you don't always get a accurate damage assessment.

Battleships... this is where your old battleships come in real-handy. If no BB's available; then dive bombers set on port-attack will do.
