Dunno. Clearly the level of micromanagement is AE is a notch above WitP.
But I know WitP is still a monster. If the difference is just small then I think AE is the way to go.
But I don't know for sure until I've immersed myself in WitP for a while.
Witp is hardly a monster for micromanagement, key thing to remember is you only need to micro manage so much, here's a prime example for you. Take a campaign game like May 1st 1942 for allies, what do allies have that need to be micromanaged? You can leave china on computer control since you can't do anything anyway, DEI theater your pretty much going to war with Mandalay and Rangoon, so your dropping supplies off at Diamond H.
That leaves the pacific theater, from December 8th and on I only micro managed Port Moresby and Noumea. Supplies, Fuel and 3 Divisions is plenty to keep Moresby on Lock down. Rest of time? I spent from december 8th to May 15th shuttling all units available to Baker Island, where I built it into a fortress and ultimately was my jumping point for the entire pacific. Every month fill 8 tankers full of oil for Sidney, 2 supply/2 fuel TF to Moresby, and 1x fuel and supply TF to Noumea.
Only units I actually micromanaged from this time was Port moresby / Carnes / Noumea / Baker Island. I made sure they had enough engineers/head quarters. Once thats over you simply can't do anything anyway because the war's just starting.

Oh if you want a good laugh also, only thing I knew about the war in the pacific before "War in the pacific" the game, was the germans bombed pearl harbor according to John Belushi. It was reading the forums, and realizing this is a game that i'm not going to beat in a week which is a plus, since I come from the Wolfenstein/Quake/Counterstrike era of kids that could beat a game in 72 hours easy. I believe I started my 2 campaign games back in February 09 and still only at 9/30/43. What I've learned and how much time I spent in this game is easily worth the money spent learning.

Misconduct,
You pointed out something that AE does not have. Delegating a theater to computer control.
This feature gives "plus points" for WitP in my books.

I LOVE this game![&o]
but, I can only play the AI.
I will just have to be content with WITP because I'm not happy about not being able to have a saved game editor.
This is just ONE of the main reasons I think I will skip on getting AE.
Heck! I would even go so far as to pay Matrix to make me an editor that only I could use with my AI games.
If that is even possible[&:]
I'm sure we could work something out!

Only good thing I can see coming out of a saved Game editor would be to give the AI more resources to at least give them a helping hand, other then that I dont see a point?

Don't forget that they promised to patch up WITP after working on AE.
They might make WITP even better!![:D]

How bout an option to give the AI more resources in the settings tab, maybe an extra 500k oil/resources/fuel/supply at Tokyo. Could possibly make the AI somewhat better, least they might actually build aircraft, thats biggest problem I have in my current game, after Rabaul got shut down, the AI practically has been non-existent. Now and then a betty or two shows up at Rabaul, truk, Palau, along with Ki-61's. I would say I see maybe 20 planes a month.

Instead of making the making the Japanese AI manage industry (seems daunting, since most human players can't even handle it), it might be more do-able to exempt the AI from actually having to produce (like auto-filling the squadrons with all damaged planes after losses).
Could also exempt the AI from ammo/fuel/sorties.
It would still incur sys damage, so KB/TF58 would have to return sometime.
But that would certainly help the challenge rating.

yeah AI in WITP makes some bone headed moves, one I've noticed is that it still sends Fighters to Truk even after I've captured all phillippines/china.
In my second campaign game, im curiously interesting in trying to take Truk, however I think the losses would be to high for me to attempt.

Oh boy, oh boy, you mean "cheatin" !!! [:D]
Interestingly, we've actually done - more or less - these things for AE - but been hollered at it a lot for it and have subsequently backed off a bit. You can either have an AI that "stalls out" as stock mostly does - or give it some "pump" as we've tried to do with AE - but with the basic idea intact across both versions (though we did rewrite the processor) this is still the basic choice for the AI script designer - though we exposed the script writing into the editor for AE.
Actually I play WITP pretty much daily (as I do AE) and I've developed a style against the AI where - I guess you could call it - house rules - but I severely "pull my punches" when playing the AI and do things like requiring high levels of prep points before doing invasions or avoidance of "taking advantage" of dumb AI moves. Also, in WITP, I know most of the "triggers" now that will cause the AI to wake up - so I can toss those in - but still "play dumb" and focus on logistics intead of "ambushing the po'ole AI". Generally though I find the more historical one plays - the better game the AI will give you.

I appreciate the historical aspects of WiTP and prefer to play that way. Good to know it will also give me a better fight.

I was not able to buy AE at release due to masive medical bills being 69 your health is most important. I am now much better but It took me till now to know what "Fixed Income" REALLY met. Now that its like $90 there is no way I can buy it.
The manual for AE is almost 3 times as long as WitP and I have enough problems understanding WitP so I can only wonder what AE's manual would be like. I don't have the time to read and understand something like that with in a reasonable amount of time.
I barely can play the Allies against the Jap AI let alone trying to play a human person. I know the AI is not that bright but I have to put in a lot of time on each turn so I figure I would spend 3 times as much time on AE. So I guess I will stick with WitP dumb AI and all as I still like to fiddle with it.
The thing is it will not be long before the control everything types will start clamoring for WitP 2 and wanting more detail,
more depth more, more, more! I can see where it is going and I can't and do not want to get on that merry go round.
The last point is ask yourself: Where will computer technology
be in the next decade? Progress in any ten year period could double or even triple in the next ten years. This means that the designers will be able to develop and sell games that ARE very complicated....but not for me. I am waiting for the promised WitP update that is supposed to happen if and when AE gets stable. I see them moving on to a bigger and better AE type game and the WitP update will die on the vine after all time is money in this game business. I hold no malice if this happens as it is just business.

very well said. I don't have the time to play AE and even though I don't consider myself able to handle a PBEM game of WitP as I would not even do as well as the AI and I can't even begin to understand the Jap production. I think where they started the AE update to where they ended up covers much more than they thought when they started.
I am sure we asll remember the announcement of the update and the 6-8 months it would take......I still get a laugh out of that.

I to must ask "why are you going on about a save game editor? It was explained to you in detail when you posted this on another forum. I have some 100 CD games and not ONE OF THEM has such a thing.
Years ago I heard a story about Gary G being paid by a guy to take out the bonsai attack in a Pacific tactical level game. This was back in the good old DOS days.
What it comes down to is if you want a save game editor and there is not one then don't buy the game. This will give you lots of cash to do other things as I have not seen a game that has such a thing , at least in the last 10 years or so. Get off the soap box and into the REAL world of computer games or give them up because no designer is going to put one in if PBEM is involved and even if it is not this has got to be the dumbest idea I have ever heard, but it takes all kinds.

I don't suppose it would be possible to have a switch in the setup that would let the player choose whichn they wanted. I am thinking that to much code would have to be changed or it might not even be possible.
