Does F4 hotkey work?
According to the manual, hotkey F4 "allows unrestricted unit placement during setup phase"
This would be terrific, especially with scenarios / campaigns you create, where the placement of units is incredibly random.
However, it does not work for me. Known bug? Workarounds?

THat's curious. It does work for me. I've been using it this afternoon. ( At least it works when i remember to hit the Fcn lock key first.
during setup phase, hit the F4, and you should be able to place units. What version, 1.01DR?
I dont know any workarounds.

IIRC you are still restricted in closeness to the enemy, as in, your rubberband will only go so far forward, if at all.

I'm pretty sure I was testing something and went almost across the map with a unit.
But I can check again, i might be mistaken.

Wait, youre right , there is something about closeness to an enemy unit!

RE: Does F4 hotkey work?
Hmmm -- i don't seem to have a "Fcn lock" key on my laptop -- i'll try some combos with F4 and see if I can get it to work -- hitting F4 alone doesn't work for me -- other Function keys work , but not F4 -- very strange
RE: Does F4 hotkey work?
Sorry to hear that. I just hopped on my laptop to check it there, and I had no problem. Hopefully someone that knows more about F keys will check this thread.
Out of curiosity, what laptop do you have.
Good luck!

RE: Does F4 hotkey work?
Thanks for the help Rick -- Unfortunately I still can't get F4 to work -- I don't think it has to do with nearness to enemies, as i was trying to move units to locations nearby where i already had troops -- but once i get past 250 (ft. or meters?), the blue band turns gray and i can't relocate. Really wish i could get ths to work. I have a Compal FL92 laptop.
Is there a relatively simple way to mod the hotkey assignments?

Sorry I couldn't help. Maybe after holiday, someone with a bit more knowledge than me will see this and give you some ideas to try.
I assume F4 is working in other applications? you might check some other tech boards, or the unoffical tech support for gamers in top of Matrix forums.
Good luck!

Unlimited does not mean Unlimited. That 250 limit is the limit IIRC as apposed to 100 IIRC.

RE: Does F4 hotkey work?
I have seen that limit too sometimes.
But those hindered units move in another direction pretty far.
This might be like Rick says. Can't move too close to (hidden) enemy.
Or "your" side has a certain amount of real estate it is allowed to move to; each side splitting the map [human vs AI]. So if a given unit's original placement is well away from that 'real estate limit', that unit will move pretty far. If a given unit's original placement is near that limit, that unit can't move much more in that direction. (But it can in another.)

Images should be easier to load at Matrix.

It occurs to me that you might be able to find something at one of the pc support forums about re-assigning f keys. someone may have a utility you can run before playing PCK. somewhere like geekheads or something?
good luck

RE: Does F4 hotkey work?
Appreciate the feedback, everyone.
Erik, I'm running 1.01 (which i believe is the most up to date, yes?)
The 250 meter limit on moving units during setup seems to be pretty consistent for me, and pressing F4 doesn't seem to change it. I can move units 249 whether I press F4 or not (which is why it seems to me that F4 is not working).
This limitation is kind of a big deal when it comes to custom scenarios and campaigns. The unit placement is incredibly random, and often just plain idiotic -- I'll start up a custom game and have a PzGren platoon on the extreme West of the map, and their armored transports on the extreme East on the map. Even if I move each 250 meters closer to one another, it will still take several turns before they can link up (assuming they don't get blown to smithereens along the way), which is *really* frustrating. Or, the game will do things like place armored transports smack-dab on the exposed front line, where, even after adjusting them 250, they have no hope of surviving the opening round of combat, even given Withdraw orders.
If the game were more intelligent about initial placement of units, perhaps the 250 meter 'adjustment' limitation wouldn't be such a big deal. But on the random generated games, the setup seems to have a knack for putting the most vulnerable units in the most vulnerable places, and for placing huge distances between infantry and their native transports.

Page 26 or the manual.
Place Unit allows you to specify a new location on the map
for the unit you have selected. This location must be within
250m of its original starting location (or 100m in PBEM play,
which does not include an enemy distance check) and also
cannot be too close to the enemy positions. If you can’t move
a unit further onto the map during placement, even if you
can’t see the enemy, this is because of the enemy distance
limit being enforced by the game. When this order is selected,
a blue line will be displayed; move the line to where you want
the unit to move and click to set the destination. A number
will be displayed next to the cursor as you move it around,
indicating the distance in meters to that spot. Text will be
displayed next to the distance, indicating the terrain type in
the location under the cursor.
