Worth buying?

Post by sapper_astro »

I own and still play the second iteration of this game released back in the early 90's; Carriers at war, CAW construction kit and CAW 2. These games have always travelled across my PC's and been the first game that is on the HD, so to my question.

Is this new version worth a purchase if the old versions are still excellent? What new features (besides graphics...) does this new version bring? What improvements over the originals is included?

The graphics in the new CAW are naturally better, but I would say that the bulk of our work went into creating a totally new interface. It is so much easier to use than the old version and it offers multiple methods for doing crucial tasks like allocating strikes. There's also a much better reporting system, where you can track what happens to individual planes, if you really want to know what happened on a strike.

I would say that once you've played under the new system you'll find it very hard to go back.

No..it is really just a rehash of the old..why pay all that money for updated graphics and a few random scenarios a few new bells...

This is on my list as the biggest disapointment of 2008...

It needs a dynamic campaign, or some kind of linked scenario package. With only single scenarios, there's a high chance of a quick flame out. Other than that, its a good game.

AP514:  Although, I see your views.  I have to say that C@W redux is a good game.  I appreciate it.  Honestly though, SSG.. why has there not
been any further expansions or, as General Chaos mentioned, "...needs a dynamic campaign, or some kind of linked scenario package.".  I would
like to be able to assign some Gato class subs in a specific area. Understanding that we can't control the iron coffins. I just want to point them
in the right direction to protect my fleet and convoys. :)  Any "added" chance of survival is better than nothing.  Your CAP can't stay up 24/7
(realistically speaking, that is). [:)]

Hear, hear AP514.

Sapper, CAW2008 is not worth of buying when you own previous versions of CAW. Im exactly in the same situation (inlcuding part than CAW pack never leave HDD :) and CAW1 was my first game). I waited for CAW2008, drooling with excitement (just like I waiting for World in Flames now [:D]). I played CAW2008 only twice (borrowed it from a friend), and game offers nothing more except better interface. For 45 Euros (or even more early after relase) you get basically standard CAW1 (IIRC 6 scenarios) with improved interface. I expected like 50 scenarios. I could not belive how poor contents of the CD were when I installed it.

Every tactic which you mastered with old CAW will be perfectly suited for CAW2008 (playing missions like automaton). My honest opinion is that buying CAW2008 is just daylight robbery. In current shape Im willing to pay 5 maybe 10 Euros (including S&H!). Vastly overinflated value.

Game need MUCH more scenarios, also campaign, and controlling subs would be nice addition. Simply copying good old CAW1 is not good enough.

I have to  agree with ypsylon. In fact I even prefer the old CAW interface. There was excitement to send your planes off and waiting to hear from them. In the new version, the excitement is gone.

Apparently they made the interface too seamless.
