GGWBTS a good starting Civil War game?

From the legendary team at 2 by 3 Games comes a new grand strategy masterpiece: Gary Grigsby’s War Between the States. Taking gamers back to the American Civil War, this innovative grand strategy game allows players to experience the trials and tribulations of the role of commander-in-chief for either side. Historically accurate, detailed and finely balanced for realistic gameplay, War Between the States is also easy to play and does not take months to finish.

GGWBTS a good starting Civil War game?

Post by Knavery »

Hey folks --
I'd like to try my hand at a Civil War Matrix title. I've been reading a lot about the big three, but can't seem to make up my mind. I'm running Windows 7, so I'd need it to be compatible with that OS. I'd also require higher resolutions such as 1680x1050 as I have a pretty big widescreen.

As far as gameplay is concerned, it really shouldn't be something that's very complex as I don't have a lot of background with that era. I'm willing to learn, but have a 9-5 job to worry about. :)

All replies are welcome. Thanks!

Perhaps I'll pass on this one. The lack of forum participation at this point is certainly a turn off. Perhaps I'll try my hand at something that has a little more player activity.

Suit yourself. My math says you waited a whopping 7 hours for a response.

This is the best strategic level game out there on the topic, so you should get it if that is what you want. Not so much if you need explosions and rifle fire.

Seven hours is a long time when you're sick with nothing else to do. I'm just concerned as I may need a lot of hand-holding with whatever title I choose. Forge of Freedom seems a little too complicated and I don't know enough about The Blue and The Gray to comment.

Works fine on Windows 7, works fine at high resolutions, comes with many tutorial videos and a great manual. Go for it! [8D]

As Erik says, it has video tutorials (18 that I narrated) along with 4 in game tutorials. The video tutorials should give you answers to some basic questions you have. It's not a very hard game to play, but there are some very different concepts to master (mostly around leaders and how they impact movement). We think it's worth learning the game as it will give you hours of fun, and is about as historically accurate as any game out on this scale. It's also relatively fast playing compared to others since it has monthly turns.

Knavery,

Forum participation has dropped off, but if you don't get answers to your questions you can typically privately email people who have been regular contributors.

As a play tester I feel an obligation to continue to support new players, so, for whatever it is worth, you may always private email me.

I think it is a great game, but I have to say I have not played the other Civil War games Matrix offers.  I do play COG EE, but I enjoy it most using simple economy and I always play quick battles.  I like the strategic level best.   I think WBTS is done very well.  It is easy to learn and start playing, but it takes some time to figure out how things work and why they often don't work.  And it provides a challenge even when playing the AI.
