LoBaron: Those air warfare threads you have posted are very informative and I think I'am not the only one to say thanks for "effort".

Thanks thats nice to hear from a player who obviousely puts so much thought into his game!

I haven't decieded whether to go in numbers or in many smaller targets/strikes. There are still time to deciede on this since we are few weeks off from the go signal. Even if we get slaughtered we will duke it out and the idea is maximize the damage to his fighter/pilot pools. Whether or not we gain air supremacy is secondary in bigger picture. However an maximized damage is an must since the these battles cannot be lopsided affairs.

Then in everything I plan I´d look at the weather. [:)]
Really appreciate your efforts and posts too.

Burma (march 3rd - 11th 1943)

Allied troops are ordered to start moving towards inner Burma. This is an 3 frontal push and objectives are Schwebo, Akyab and Myitkina.

An immedate airstrike is ordered as well. The main target is enemy airfield at Magwe.

From Chittagong there will be grand total of 300 aircraft hitting the airfield. There are +150 bombers and some +130 fighters doing this mission. The alltitude is set even at 14,000 feet.

At Imphal there around 80 fighters set on Sweep the airfield at 25,000 feet. Hopefully these guys get the job done.

An smaller airstrike is scheduled againts Myitkina with some 50-60 aircraft hitting the base.

Lets keep fingers crossed that this will work. Either way it is going to be brutal and I'am not about let this one go.

Alaska (march 3rd - 11th 1943)

The invasion fleet is loaded up at Kodiak. We will move out immediately and hit the beaches at Cold Bay.

There are no carrier aircover and the CAP is provided by allied P38 fighters initially due to their range capability.

The escorts for this mission will BB Idaho along with dozen or destroyers.

I have also ordered an airstrike by 4E bombers againts Dutch Harbour and Umnak Island. The idea is to keep his fighters busy while we secure the Cold Bay area.

When we seize this base an allied lba fighters and bombers are moved in immediately. This will be jumping towards Umnak Island, Dutch Harbour and Adak Island... maybe even for the Kuriles later on.

I think this pic demonstrates the snow situation up here in the north quite well. It's the same in Estonia. Silly amounts of snow. Last week we had communication classes and it took us almost an hour to pool out 150-200 meters of telephone wire in the forest. Whenever the snow crust failed, and it often did when you were carrying the wire, you fell in up to your crotch. It was quite fun as we only did it for an hour or two, but for any longer and it gets really annoying [:'(]

PS. The sun is out and it's still snowing.. again [:D]

PPS. The amount of snowfall is not that abnormal I guess, although it's up in the higher end of the scale, but the fact that there hasn't been a proper thaw and it hasn't melted once during the winter is somewhat unusual.

String: That pic could be from my backyard!!! [:D][:D] ...allthough there is room only to open up the door! ...and they talk how the climate is about to warm up!!! [:D]

Oh, that is bad there too! Thank good I'am already in army reserves since I would hate go into the woods with this climate.

Allthough it hasn't snowed in 3 days now! I wonder what's wrong... that thought speak volumes. "Good to hear" it has stayed a bit further in the south!

At the moment I think there will be snow even June!

Aztec, why would you bother with Dutch Harbor at this time? You can't build airbasese there.

crsutton: There are few reasons. 1) It has an level 5 port which can rearms bigger surface combat fleets. 2) I hate leave such an base behind. Eventhough not an big an airfield but more than adequate for patrol purposes etc. 3) Simply because I want to payback all the suffering he has has inflicted upon us in earlier months.

Even at level 3 airfield it can support three fighter groups and it is closer to Adak Island than Cold Bay.

I think Umnak Island is more valuable though in bigger picture though.

...but first we need clear Cold Bay and than start dealing with these nuisances.

I just got the combat replay file so we might see some action. An update on later this evening.

The infantry units continue to push towards inner Burma.

Aleutians (march 12th - 13th 1943)

The invasion forces have hit the beaches at Cold Bay.

There seems to be only the 85th Naval Guard garrisoning the place. We have already landed 160av worth of infantry and units so the base should fall swiftly.

No enemy Nell/Betty bombers were detected. These beasts are elsewhere waiting for me.

The weather prevented coordinated strikes againts Umnak Island and Dutch Harbour. There seems a squadron of Oscars in place.

This marks also the debut of allied Ventura bomber. It did an good when set on ground assault.

...and that is how it ended. We will go for another round next turn since the airfield damage levels are shown at +80%. If we manage to hit the airfield hard than it might become unoperational and he still has nearly 100 aircraft on it.

As for the actual losses we inflicted. It is impossible to say. The FOW is so strong with AE that I wohn't even bother to guess. My estimate is that maybe 40-50 aircraft were lost.

I needed to swap few escorts since some of the squadrons were in need of rest. We shall see how the "new boys" perform.

Meanwhile our ground units continue their push. The terrain is bad so the speed of advance agonizingly slow.

Not that bad of an turn here....

And that was in thunderstorms too ! If the weather had been clear i suspect Magwe would be a pile of rubble. Your losses are still nasty imo especially when you meet the CAP fresh but the later attacke against disrupted CAP seem much better and you must be attriting his planes quite badly here too.

If i was Dave I'd swop out some sqds and fly LRCAP over Magwe instead , have you got enough recon to search all those nearby AF's ,, only needs a size 2 for LRCAP. a sudden target switch could let you hit a useful airbase while all the fighters are away on LRCAP duty. You have focused so heavily on Magwe a strike where he doesnt expect one could work out nicely.

Just my 2p .
sorry for the spelling . English is my main language , I just can't type . and i'm too lazy to edit :)

Aztez- I bet it feels good to hit back for a change. Keep up the good fight!   What is the state of his industry at Magwe?

Rob: You might be right the weather. Allthough it seems to be Thunderstorms 90% of days in Burma with AE.

Hopefully the base will be finished up with the next round or I might need to rest a turn or two or shift a focus a bit.

I really don't mind him LRCAP Magwe. That is not as effective as CAP it seems. (I might be wrong though). The idea is to keep his airforce busy and inflict maxium amount of damage to him. So far we are not doing that poor of an job.

I'am flying some recon flights but those information are sketchy since I do not have adequate amount of recon dedicated planes at my service here.

After next round though we might shift the targets a bit. There are Mandalay and Schwebo from which he can support his operations.

Oh, and those old RN battlewagons are moving forward. I'am going to sneak them into Chittagong. Nomore BB Yamato visits... that plain and simple. Naturally if they don't get sunk on their way there.

offenseman: Thanks. It actually does feel good to get things ongoing. Industrial damage at Magwe is around 70-80 points active oil and refinery. I wohn't bother with them since from now on it all about his airforce and precious pilots.

Btw, CV Wasp is just 16 days off and will head out immediately. It will bring along some 90 (70exp) Wildcats. Once at Hawaji we start loading up troops for large naval operations. The prepping points are up.

Appreciated the comments as always.

But we can't know that...The AE FOW is absolutely heavy and complete so you never really know anything unless your opponent tells you...you "might" get vague ideas from combat reports, at best, so yea, you never really know anything, all he can do is ask dave lol

sath: Not much happening in the Oz. Dave hasn't advanced further into south and we have captured Cairns area back.

Also moving some units into Alice Springs to see what is up there. I think he has mostly abandoned this theatre though.

I'am building up an airfield at Cairns though. Which is coming along and once fully operational it will be used againts enemy bases in range.

Other than that I'am prepping some infantry units to offensive purposes.

That is an short summary of things at Oz.

Yamato_Blitzer: Nice to see. You haven't around the boards much lately. Everything ok?

It is an guessing game as you said. His losses might be much higher or than again much lower. Really no way to tell this with new FOW model.

As you said the casualty levels are "vague" at best.

aztez, what's your OOB invading Burma? Just curious what you are bringing to the party. Do you have a HR against using restricted units?

Q-Ball: At first I want to say that you have done absolutely fantastic job vs Cuttlefish. This game is not looking nearly as "progressive". At least not yet.

No, we do not have any HR regarding this issue. As I could have moved forward a lot earlier but I did choose refrain myself doing that.

Basically a self made HR if anything.

The actual OOB is shown in the combat part of the update below. Some units have changed their designated commands from the start.

Hmmm, intersting... the file showed +50 Tojos damaged but these were not shown on the intel screen. I wonder whether or not he is capable of moving them out.

There were no raids on the 17th. Why? Most likely weather played a part here.

Allied recon showed the Magwe airfield +90% damaged. We will send another wave next turn to finish the job up. After that we shall focus on other potential targets.

Q-Ball asked for the OOB advancing towards Burma. The belos list the units...

Akyab

42nd cavalry regiment armour, 21st Indian mountain gun regiment, 25th mountaing un regiment, 28th mountain gun regiment, 7th Indian division, 255th armoured brigade, 44th Indian
division and 23rd Indian brigade.

Schwebo

3rd Carabiiners regiment, 6th Australian division, 2/11th field regiment, 18th Austalian brigade, 7th Australian cavalary regiment, 20th Indian mountain gun regiment,
19th Indian division, 50th tank brigade, 167th wing engineer unit, 23rd British brigade and 23rd Indian brigade.

Myithkina

212 AIF Pioneer batallion, 39th Indian division, 16th Indian brigade and 36th Chinese division.

Those are the initial advancing forces. I have kept substantial reserve back in order to deal with any flanking movement he wants to try out.

These troops can easily be deployed forward if needed and desired.

We should arrive at Kalemyo next turn where the Japanese division is occupying the hex. If everything goes as planned we should be able knock it out of the war swiftly.

Good results on Magwe! If possible I would keep pounding him, repairing the AF eats
up supplies and maybe you can get some AC on the ground.
I´m sure he is able to pull the fighters out using the road though.

Wonder if you can cut off those units at Akyab. Its just too juicy. [;)]

Wow man you a drowning in snow. Havent seen this amount in Austria for some years. [X(]
