Tech Gain from Scrapped Ships

I play with the slowest level of research.

I think something's screwy with the tech gain from derelict ships. I went from beginning engine tech to the best in the game with one scrapped ship. Crazy, that was. [:D]

I went from Standard armor past Reactive in one. from SY-100 past SY-300 too. from Maxos Blaster I passed Maxos Blaster SL From Quantum Engines to halfway done with Quantum Engine RX From level 1 labs to the first of the level 3 labs

I'm Quameno (technocracy) - second races are human and Kiadian.

I've yet to get any tech from research Labs - It's easier to take out some pirates - the remnants  that join my fleet are waaaay better than any research I get from labs

EDIT:

I noticed some of the pirates have unusually good fuel tanks - the best in the game I think. I'll double check that these give the big bonus
