There are little colored boxes below the counter icons. What do they mean?

It's in the manual.

I never use them.

Action points, can attack, can move etc.

I'd have to read the manual again.

I believe it is in there. If not, just note the colors when you move a land unit, then you can figure it out.

For me they are too small on counters and that is what I use.

They are much better on the sprites and figures.

It is NOT in the manual (at least I couldn't find it).And I don't see them on the sprites (am I going blind?). Is it unreasonable to expect the game programmers to know what the symbols in the game mean?

Edit: I AM going blind: they are on the right side of the sprites, but I still don't know what they mean...

Well they're not too helpful in gameplay anyway.  So I guess we can ignore.

As I recall, one of the lights tells if the unit is understrength? Another if the unit has moved?

One is AP strength remaining, one is unit has upgrades available, one is unit in supply, there's one more...
all the information is available on the unit screens, so the counter lights are basically superfluous.
Most of the time, I switch them off in my counter mods, then I get the call to include them.
In TOW they were famously know as "the blinking blue light".
