Okay back to What ship am I?

I have the following two clues for each of the two ships in question (Froonp and abj9562 are NOT allowed to "guess")

SHIP 1 (Easy Question)
a) I am represented by a counter in World In Flames.
b) Neither I nor my sister survived the war, although at least my sister was lost fighting heroically at sea…unlike me.

SHIP 2 (Difficult Question)
a) I am represented by a counter in World In Flames, but really I should have two counters.
b) I had seven sisters, although eleven sisters was the original plan.

More clues tomorrow unless someone gets it.

c) No doubt our enemies had many nicknames for us, but one of the names suggests we may have appeared in a Disney film.
d) My name is not the easiest to pronounce for foreigners.
e) I played a key role in four operations; the sinking of an aircraft carrier being my biggest success.


The last three clues for ship 2:

c) I served in both World Wars – although only very briefly at the end of World War I
d) I changed my name during the Second World War, although there was some minor controversy surrounding the change of name.
e) I survived the war and was broken up shortly afterwards.

The second ship question is much tougher, but after chatting with a friend we came up with HMS Royal Sovereign, which was commissioned as the Arkhangelsk for the USSR during the war.

Zeal4u, you are thinking on the right lines here re the change of name, although there were only 5 R-class (8 planned) so its not Royal Sovereign.

Well, it's June and the annual Mid-Atlantic Air Museum WWII weekend has begun again. Nothing makes you want to play Wif more than real WWII planes flying overhead. There are a trio of Mitchells, a pair of Flying Forts, plus one each Lightning, Spitfire, Thunderbolt, Dauntless, Avenger, Neptune, Helldiver and a Harpoon. The Helldiver and Harpoon are the only known planes of their type still flying. The musuem is also raising funds to repair and make as the only flyable a P-61 Black Widow (there are 3 other non-flying left in the world).

There are also over a thousand re-enactors at the show. Airfields, villages, 1940's dance and dinners, FDR and MacArthur (re-enactors not zombies), and skirmishes --- great fun. You can ride a PT-17, PT-19 and I believe if you got the dough a B-17 Flying Fortress (at least the dignitaries and news reports can).

Does anybody know what the Siamese coastal defence ships Sri Ayuthia and Dhonburi were named after? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Ayuthia, or Ayutthaya, was the name of a kingdom that once occupied parts of Thailand, I think that "Sri Ayutthaya" was part of the capital´s name.

Dhonburi was the capital of Thailand after Ayutthaya and before Bangkok became capital.

So, former capital cities seem to be the link.

.P In the early thirties the Siamese navy was very small, consisting of just
two small, British built, coastal defence ships and a collection of elderly
torpedo and gunboats.
.P In the mid-thirties, a new Siamese government authorised an increase in
military expenditure and in particular an increase in naval spending. Siam turned
to Japan and Italy for construction of new coastal defence ships, sloops, torpedo
boats and submarines. The largest of the vessels ordered for the new navy were
two cruisers, although the outbreak of the Second World War meant that they were
never delivered by the Italian builders.
.P As a result, at the outbreak of the war in September 1939, the largest ships
in the Siamese navy were the Sri Ayuthias, a class of two coastal defence ships
that were built for the Siamese navy by the Japanese between 1936 and 1938. The
two ships were named Sri Ayuthia (Ayutthaya) and Dhonburi (Thon Buri) after
ancient capitals of Siam.
.P They were not especially powerful or well armoured ships, certainly when
compared to coastal defence vessels in vogue with the Scandanavian countries, but
their four 8-inch guns, fitted in two twin turrets, were capable of packing a
considerable punch. Anti-aircraft (AA) defence was provided by four single 3-inch
guns supported by four 40mm guns for close-range AA protection.
.P Armour defence was not particularly heavy - certainly when compared with their
European counterparts - and both belt and deck armour was more akin to that given
to contemporary cruisers rather than coastal defence ships.
.P These were slow ships, capable of just over 15 knots.
.P Both vessels were badly damaged during the Battle of Koh Chang, the main naval
engagement of the French-Thai war of 1941. The Siamese tried to take advantage of
the recent French defeat at the hands of Germany and so seize disputed border
areas on the Indo-China-Siam border. The battle took place on the 17th January,
when the French cruiser Lamotte-Picquet and her sloop escorts, decisively
defeated ships of the Siamese navy. The Siamese lost three torpedo boats, and
both of the Sri Ayuthias had to be beached to ensure they did not sink after
being badly damaged. Unfortunately for HTMS Dhonburi, she sank later anyway when
under tow.
.P Her sister was luckier and after being repaired, was to survive the war. HTMS
Sri Ayuthia was scrapped in 1951.
.P Note one World In Flames counter (Sri Ayuthia) is marked with a CA (heavy
cruiser) symbol and one (Dhonburi) with CL (light cruiser). This marking has no
effect on game play other than to indicate that Dhonburi is only available when
playing with Cruisers In Flames.

nice stuff....didn't the Thai MIL piece have a write-up done for the Thai/French war too? or the Indo-China TERR? Not sure if the write-ups are linked internally?

and I would imagine the Italians probably launched the hulls intended for Thailand and perhaps became other WiF counters instead?
