RE: Turn 6 - Battle of U Minh phase 4

Post by Boonierat »

The target for Operation DAN CHI 129 is the local force battalion southwest of Kien Hung, yet, players seem to be attracted by the U Minh Forest for some reason, maybe the mission text is misleading. You might want to extract the 21st Div the next turn though, before it returns to reserve status.

Yeah the attack on the U Minh forest was a disaster I will be withdrawing the 21st Division guys its totally wrecked. I just figured you had to attack the unit in the forest when I read the mission description.

The U Minh forest is a huge mangrove swamp extending from Kien Hung south to Ca Mau, but it's hard to simulate in TOAW, since mangrove terrain does not exit.

Turn 7 - News summary

Post by comte »

Turn 7, 4/19/65 to 4/25/65

Game turn 7 has one mission assigned to Secure and build a CIDG camp at Phu Tuc. Another Carrier the USS Bonhomme Richard has joined Dixie station bringing the total carriers operating off the coast of South Vietnam to 5. Now that aircombat missions have been authorized by Washington I should be able to call for air-strikes on Viet Cong positions. I have pulled out the 21st ARVN Division from the U Minh forest area as the unit is wrecked after the recent combat with a heavily fortified VC position. Here's the summary for the current turn.

Turn 8 - News Summary

Post by comte »

Turn 8 - April 28th to May 2 1965

This turn opens up pretty quietly like most so far with no enemy attacks on Republic of Vietnam forces or the Free World forces in South Vietnam. There are quite a few missions this turn most of them are the setting up and securing CIDG (Civilian Irregular Defense Group) camps. MACV has ordered six camps to be opened this turn in A Luoi, Ha Thanh, Buon Ea, An Lac, Ta Bat, and Bong Son. There is also a big ARVN Marine and Ranger amphibious/airmobile operation planned this turn operation Tien Giang/19/65. On April 30th of this turn the U.S. Department of Defense notifies the U.S. embassy in Saigon that "decision has been taken to deploy in early May, at your call, three battalion equivalents into Bien Hoa/Vung Tau and three battalion equivalents in Chu Lai." This means that more U.S. forces are slated for duty in Vietnam the buildup to save the Republic of Vietnam from the communists is kicking into high gear. Here's this turn's News summary.

Turn 8 - Operation Tien Giang/19/65

Post by comte »

Operation Tien Giang/19/65

Between April 28th and the 30th the ARVN have planned a combined amphibious/airmobile operation called Tien Giang/19/65 that will penetrate the southernmost part of Kien Hoa province in the Delta, unvisited by Government troops for 15 months. The Vietnamese Marine Corps Task force A with the 1st and 3rd battalions will land southeast of Tien Ton while two ARVN ranger battalions will establish blocking positions to the west. Upon landing the VNMC TF found a Viet Cong local force battalion. With the help of Planes from U.S. carriers operating in Dixie Station its hoped that the ARVN can destroy this trapped VC force in this spear and net operation.

Turn 9 - III MAF

Post by comte »

III MAF lands at Da Nang

On the 6th of May 1965 the 9th Marine Expeditionary brigade is transformed into the III Marine Expeditionary Force a corps level HQ in command of all US Marine forces in South Vietnam. On the 7th of May the III MEF's name is changed to the III Marine Amphibious Force because the Expeditionary Force name was too similar to the French Expeditionary Corps of the 1950's which was bound to inflame Vietnamese nationalists of every political stripe. The III MAF was commanded by Major General Lewis W. Walt. Also arriving at Da Nang airbase this turn is the Marine Corps Squadron VMO-2 which is armed with Huey Helicopter gunships.

Post by comte »

Marines land at Chu Lai set up 3rd Enclave

On 7th May three battalions of Marines begin landing at Chu Lai 55 miles south of Da Nang setting up a third Marine enclave in South Vietnam. The Marines have planned to construct an airbase there with an eight-thousand-foot by one-hundred-foot runway, as well as taxiways, parking, and maintenance facilities. As at Da Nang two months earlier the marines land unopposed and are greeted by south Vietnamese maidens bearing flowers as well as the press and local dignitaries. The Rifleman ignore all the hoopla and push inland to dig in and prepare the area for the intended airbase which will be constructed by the navy seabees 10th mobile construction Battalion.
