How many fighter do you believe are there? How many bombers? I have never really understood where that "auxiliary" number fits in, whether it applies to both fighters and bombers, or just one or the other.

Actual axuliary = quoted auxiliary/10 in my experience.  They are everything bar fighters and bombers.

Your detection level is good, so I'd say your fighter and bomber numbers are probably +/- 10%.

I never understood this, but in a recent games I have seen some Detection level at 9/10 and intel shows me 200 fighters, yet once you start sweeping and bombing the AF, it seems like there is nothing there but maybe a handful of fighters, not the 200 you originally see, granted I can understand they could of been CAP from another island or base, but all to often I see an isolated place like Pago Pago and my latest recon shows over 150 fighters, yet when bombing and sweeping the ever living daylights out of the place I don't destroy anything on the ground or in the air.

My experience is that when you get good detection level (in your case 9/10) what you see is usually what you get.
150-200 fighters
10-30 bombers
lots of patrol, transport and recon planes, but probably not as much as the number suggests

I've always been confused by the Aux numbers reported.  I think I read a comment one time that damaged planes are added into the Aux total, but I've never seen a confirmation of that.

In my previous PBEM vs. Miller, I had reports like that for Japanese bases in the DEI. I often suspected that carrier aircraft were included in the reports, accounting for the high numbers. I am nearly positive that happened on more than one occasion, but I can't prove it.

So, do you think it could mean carriers are present in the hex?

No, no carriers.
