Strategy about Blitzkrieg....

Post by hgilmer3 »

So, let me see if I understand this....

Let's say you have a line as the Germans facing the Soviets and you have a second line or units 3-4 hexes back. The best strategy is to use those units in the back for the first attack, so then that possibly frees up the front line to exploit breakthroughs?

There is some strategy and tactics built into the manual and tutorial. Could you provide a screen shot I am not following your 100%?

Hgilmer, that will depend on the tactical particulars, hard to give a general answer. Sometimes it's better to use the front line as your 1st echelon and create breakthroughs with them and exploit with the reserves. If you are stacked to the gills up front, it can take a lot of movement points to disengage units and create space for the second line to lead the breakthrough attack. (This is particularly true for the Sovs, less so with the Germans.)

Adverse weather and terrain can affect your decision here as well.

Early on for the Germans I use this strategy. This way I can penetrate further with my armor units on the first few turns. Later in the game as the Russian line gets stronger it does not work so well.

The "move units from the rear to the front and attack with those first" strategy works for the first few turns, but after that the infantry will either be at the front, or will be too far behind to clear a path for the Panzers (the checkerboard defense is mostly effective when there's nothing to remove it aside from mobile units).

The others understood where I was going with that and answered my question. [:)]

Thanks for the answers all.  It is a strategy I will use when possible and effective.

Thats exactly what I do. Use those further back infantry divisions to move up, conduct their hasty attacks to displace the enemy line and make a hole. These infantry divisions will form the front side of the pocket. Use the front line infantry to exploit and start forming the flanks of a pocket and to clear out any miscellaneous units from the mobiles unit potential avenues of approach. Use the mobile units last to move freely through the breach and form up firmly on the backside of the pocket and seal the deal.
