Another Noob Question: Moving Fuel/Supplies to bases..what gives?

Post by Rusty1961 »

Okay, L.A. in my game, 1/22/42, has over 1,000,000 fuel units. Yet right next door sits March AF base with ZERO fuel units. Ditto with Port Hueneme.

How does an inland base such as March AFB get fuel given it is right next door to L.A. which has such enormous reserves?

Ditto with other baes. How do I get the fuel from planes which have a lot of the stuff, or supplies, to bases which are a few hexes away and are connected by rail-line???

I realize that to win this game is to master the logistics, everything else is secondary.

Planes should read "places".

Auto supply handles transfers via rail. Just up the request button for supply and it will attempt to store 3x the amount requested. There's no reason for fuel except for at a port or an HI facility. The more ships in port the greater the amount that will be auto-railed to it, which has its advantages and disadvantages.

Supplies you can use the supply spinner. The code will try to get x3 the amount in the spinner. This is adjusted all sorts of ways for distance, weather, periodicity, transport route, etc. Or, you can take supply there if it's a port, or air transport it if there's an airbase.

Fuel will flow where it's needed, or you can take it. March Field is not a port, so it will never need or get fuel. My game is in 11/43 and it's at zero. Look at the base screen on the left, and you'll see a "Fuel Requested" line. That's what the port will try to get to, influenced by lots of factors. A big one is how many ships are at the port. Lots of ships, it asks for more fuel. Fuel will also flow around, but not every day, and also influenced by lots of factors. Also remember that industry can use up fuel to make HI and supplies. There is no spinner for fuel.

Important to note also is that Heavy Industry will use all of the fuel that it automatically draws each turn, so though a base shows zero fuel when you look at it, it will draw what it needs during the turn resolution and then burn it up shortly thereafter, leaving the base at zero again. You only need to concern yourself with heavy industry if you get a specific message saying that it failed to produce that turn.

March Field has no industry.

How do I "up the request"? I can't find the button.

Ditto for getting supplies to Darwin.

Just a note cause I didn't see it mentioned. Fuel is really bunker fuel used in ships and steel mills. It is not aviation fuel (that is supplies...)

To up the request on the base screen use the arrows next to the supply requested line (the only one you can change). Remember it will go for 3x so if you set it to 20k it will try and draw 60k.

Base detail screen. Left top, "Supplies Required" line has arrow buttons. I call that "the spinner" but it's not a universal term.

Note that the code will try to get x3 that amount into the base. That's important when you're trying to get over 20k there for aircraft replacements, and to have enough to get LCU replacements out of the pools. Be careful you don't merrily spin up every base to max. You want to be careful you don't knock the log system over. You can also, to some extent, use the spinners to "walk" supply across country to the base you need it, but that isn't as easy to do as it was pre-patches. Be aware that supply doesn't flow every day on every route. There are also restrictions as from the monsoon rules, terrain modifiers, etc.

Just experiment, take a few notes, see how things go for you.
