1861 historical setup question

Post by battleground »

what settings should be used to try an historical setup in the 1861 game. when i do just
what is on screen during current games the Confederacy raises an impossible army of
300000 troops and has better weaponry than i do by mid 1862 and this is on the even
level! lol! might be renamed "Mclellan's nightmare"! There is not a guide for the
strength listings and as they appear now its a wierd game.

Also my Union expeditionary force landed at Tallahasse in Florida, captured the Capital
of Florida and marched up and captured the capital of Georgia. No response from the
Confed AI nor any appearance of problems for the confederacy. Also even tho i hold
Tallahasse Confederate troops are still being raised in the province and I cannot appear
to capture it tho Confed troops in Kentucky don't seem to have the same problem over-
running that state and capital.

Also what happened to W. Virginia? You cannot do anything with Wheeling and there
appears no way to create the state. There were troops raised there but you cannot do
so in the current game. Something left out?

I am getting a better handle on the game system but there are alot of holes in the rules
operating the game and background information based on history that you cannot see
happen nor affect to happen.

It is currently the most fun to play but i am not really interested in a just tactical game
on the ACW and hope that FoF2 does get made in the future. I will put some ideas in
the thread for that. thanks!!

Have you downloaded all the patches?  They have more realistic scenerios.

Also, I agree on the West Virginia thing.  They should have included a way to create the state.

I have it updated to the latest version. I'd rather start at the 1861 beginning than the standard game as i
want to set the focus of how i run the war. The game startup does not mention if the game start (both sides
start at normal) is correct for a historical game, just that production is equal. I have looked at the few mods
available but i am not sure they work or will run on the current 1.12 version. That W. Virginia remains an
unusable area for the Union is unusual with the amount of forces raised there during the war. There was alot
of difference in outlook towards secession in WV compaired to the remainder of Virginia

Let's see, a lot of issues to address...

West Virginia: I can't remember the thinking, but it might just have been that it would have involved a lot of programming, and one has to remember that programming any feature always comes at the expense of one or more other features. So a West Virginia rule might have meant something more important being left out.

Confederate hordes: Sounds like you're playing the "balanced" scenario (i.e., the one that gives the CSA the better economy), and possibly at a difficulty level that gives the CSA an added boost (if I remember correctly how that works).

Georgia taken: The AI might not have responded right away, but at some point it will. How many turns has it been? Also, if you're threatening Richmond then the AI might have had to make the choice not to weaken its Virginia defenses.

Please do add to the Wish List. Thanks.

Leaving out W. Virgina is kinda like seeing a great movie star without a front tooth! very
noticable. Hopefully will be addressed in any future fix. Alot of forces raised on
both sides there. Same problem landing a Union army in Texas. Took all the
cities but never gained anything, no provinces at all went to the Union. Even
marching my 6000 division around did nothing to change ownership of areas
in Texas.

Well, I don't believe any States in the South were captured by seagoing forces like you describe with Texas.

As far as West Virginia, perhaps the easiest thing to do would be to have a State already in existance, to be treatied like Missouri at the beginning of the war (ie.  must be conquered).  That way, you don't need any special rules about creating a new state.

I don't expect Texas to join the union. It would be nice to be able to build some
stuff there at least when you conquor all the cities. I agree on W. Virginia that
a "Missouri" type solution might be good. Both sides should be able to raise forces
"Volunteers" from some of the border states as well.
