The machinegun just north of us continues to fire into the village, but we have no further targets. Sgt Rittenahaus yells, "Go, go, go!". Countless hours of training, and combat, keep us together as we sprint forward. We manage to get into a copse of trees without incident.

A rain of 76mm artillery rounds is falling everywhere. I set the machinegun up again, overlooking frozen furrows of earth. The enemy could be anywhere, no shortcuts now. The Lieutenant is nearby again, and I can hear the radio calls intermittenly. Sightings of Russian tank destroyers, more T34's, and enemy recon units flood the net, along with fire support calls.

Enemy rifle fire thickens a little, but no rounds come near us. The Lieutenant hand signals us forward, and we begin to move again...

Then, distantly, a most curious sound. We hear the repeated attempts to start a large engine. Chugga. Chuggauggaugga. Chuggacoughcough VROOM! VROOOOOOM!!! Mein Gott! It is a Soviet vehicle! It must have broken down, and we have just missed it being helpless!

The fortunes of war. But for us spotting and engaging the Soviet recon unit, we would have killed the vehicle. So some live while others die. Or, are we alive because we engaged them? If we had stumbled across a tank, totally quiet because of a breakdown, might they have killed us ?

Nice screenshot! The squad just south of the road is Rittenhaus's squad form my reports. The one north of the road is the other MG that the squad heard. The halftrack must be a glitch, I do not have any, and yours are dam sure not there!

The Effects of Capitalism...

Post by Orzel Bialy »

Germanski infantry continue to creep forward despite the hail of gunfire that greets them. A typhoon of shells of every size and type has developed. Small calibre rifle, SMG, and LMG bullets send multi-colored tracer rounds sailing through the night air...and into their targets and surrounding areas. Heavy cannons fire off AP and HE rounds at both soft and hard targets...their heavy "crumps" drown out the small arms fire for moments at a time. Then there are the artillery and mortar pieces adding to the havoc from their firing positions to the rear.
This torrent of shells has also started ground fires here and there in the area around the isba. These fires too range from small to large...the biggest being the burning tanks.
The Colonel cautions us to keep our eyes open and to remain alert. The Fascists have had their noses bloodied by the first tank duel...but that does not me they will not try again. He believes they are regrouping beyond the edge of the farmlands...and will attempt to strike from another direction.
Moments later there are reports of enemy infantry approaching from the flanks. They seem to be creeping forward in a skirmish line with the aim of finding a clear and safe path for their supporting armor...validation that the Colonel may be correct again in his hunch.
Quickly a support group of armor rushes up and blasts away at the enemy units spotted by our scouts. Most take two or three rounds of heavy cannon and MG fire before they "pop" smoke and retreat. Especially effective at busting up these infantry probes are the "Quad" .50 caliber AA vehicles sent to us by our capitalist American allies. The enemy flees after one or two bursts from these machines...not willing to stand up to the hail of shells these guns release in quick salvos.
For now, the line holds and the isba is still in our hands...but we await the German onslaught that we are sure will come. Germanski does not give up easily.

We have recieved orders to fall back! Amid the din of uncountable Soviet tank guns, the order is repeated. More Panzers explode and men avoid the light created by their fires. The Soviet force must be much bigger than expected. Sgt. Rittenhaus gives the order, and we begin to march, warily watching the rear.

Ok, I F9ed it. I lost 2 or 3 more tanks of my seven (including reinforcements) total. I lost count of Soviet tanks, heavy tanks, and tank destroyers. I will post my OOB's later.

It is a very cool map. I bought an infantry heavy force, not being aware that the start lines were that far apart. With the German prices, I could not realistically buy both. I really am disappointed in the cost of German equipment. It is just not worth the performance that you get out of it.

Anyways, with one victory hex, the faster Soviet force was able to set up and wait for me. I saw one miss by an enemy tank on my tanks, despite the hit percentages, so bad luck hit me too.

Anyways, very cool DAR, Orzel! Thanks! Password was birdy.

I do not believe that these forces provide a fair match, Jess. Even the exact same tank costs 40 more for the Germans! It should cost them even less, they got it for free, lol (the T34m43). If you really want to, we can do it. I will send it to you if you wish.

Germanski Retreat

Post by Orzel Bialy »

Two more enemy panzers are blasted to pieces and their infantry is cut down by heavy fire of all calibers...in the end it is all too much for them to shoulder...and they begin to retreat.
Another Victory for the Glorious Red Army.

Well...not what I expected...and I feel cheated somewhat. Not because of anything Goblin did...but by the fact that I wanted to really win out on a slug-fest and it didn't turn out that way. :(

Goblin's force was not suited for the task at hand...and I was able to fend him off without many losses. Though I would like to boast of my victory...it seems hollow in light of the circumstances.

I guess I'm just frustrated because I want to be able to claim that I beat the Green Master fair and square!!! Now I will have to wait to the next time.

I'll post my forces as total units...since I bought some then nixed a section here and there to mix in other units I thought I might need.

My Force:
1 x SO HQ
6 x IS-2M's
13 x T-34/85's
2 x SU-85M's
4 x SU-76M's
1 x Gaz 67 FO
4 x Kat. BM-8 Rocket Arty
1 x Ammo Dump
4 x ZSU M17's (quad 50's)
12 x Captured PF AT units
12 x Scouts
6 x SO Bazooka teams
2 x SO Snipers

Re-inforcements: (arrived the last turn)
21 x SO Cavalry units

My force was not infantry strong...so had Goblin gotten close enough to the isba for close combat...I would have been in some trouble I think.
I had intended to ride my AT units up to the isba and let them "scout out" Goblins forces and take out what armor they could...then I would counter-attack with my armor and cavalry re-inforcements. But it was not to be...and after turn three I moved everything up to just "stonewall" him and bleed him white.
Next time Goblin....next time my friend.

18 AT teams?!? Foul! The 4 quad 50's would have prevented it from becoming a close quarters action (not to mention 20+ cavalry units) because of the sight range. They had already chewed he!! out of the infantry that had been spotted.

I am sorry to have ended it so soon, but you all know I will not waste anyones time when a game is lost. This one was. It may have been different (slightly?) if Orzel had to come at me, but he didn't, and it wasn't. I hate to beat it into the ground, but his 6 IS2 tanks cost less than my 7 Panzers(2 IVJ's, 5 IVH's), and easily outgunned them. That left him 13 T34/85's, plus assorted vehicles. I believe that the costs are skewed, and need fixed.

Orzel, could you attach the turn so I can look at it? I need to get my OOB. Thanks. Good match, and I am setting up and mailing you another. I refuse to take Germany again in H2H, do you want them? Something else in mind?

too personally...just me being a smart@ss. :D ;)

I would love to fight another battle...and perhaps my taking the German side would help me understand your position. I guess because I've only played against the AI in H2H...I may not be fully comprehending the differences in the same light as you.

I had:

2- SS Rifle Companies
1- Volksgrenadier Company
2- Platoons 37mm AT guns
1- Section 37mm AT guns
1- Section (2 tanks) PzIVJ's (non-elite)
1- FO
1- 76.2mm FG Battery OB
1- 122mm FH(r) Battery OB
1- Two Man MC Unit

I called in:

1- Platoon PzIVH (non-elite)

Besides the cost issues, I would like to state that I LOVE the casualty reports, or actually the lack thereof! Very cool. The OOB's are also killer. I also enjoy the fact that artillery costs a little more, making you not waste any rounds. I REALLY love having those 122mm available as the Germans! Definately all big plusses!
