Out of Memory Exceptions - any ideas?

Post by skigrinder »

Hi,
I am continually plagued by out-of-memory exceptions when running large games (DW ROTS 1.508 - 1400 systems).
These happen during the savegame operation and also during normal play.
My system is XP with max 3GB memory - Core-Duo T9400 2.53GHz - NVIDIA Quadro FX 77M

Everything I've found on this forum suggests I should be ok.
Are there specific virtual memory (or other) settings that need to be made in XP?
Is anyone else having this problem?
Please help.
Thanks,
skigrinder

Hi skigrinder and welcome to the forum. Unfortunatelly, given the 1400 systems, you're hitting the usual 32bit memory limitation for which there's no cure. You can add an extra gig of physical memory and set the /3gb in the boot.ini but I have that and it still doesn't help on games that large. It's a wall and there are only two radical solutions for it: play a smaller galaxy or get on a 64bit OS.

Just what Data said, you need at least 4GB memory and better off running 64bit OS. I never had any problems with Vista, but for Win7 not sure how stable that can be.

I used to have the same problem on my laptop with 2 GB Ram. It didnt help that the video card shared system RAM as well.

The other guys hit the nail on the head solution wise.

While I'm here

Why is the save game sooo large??

I'm running at 80 MB save on a 1400 star galaxy.

Im not a programmer but thats alot of data.

I think it depends on what you want to put in it; I remember on earlier versions they were even bigger and the save / load time was proportionally increased. One of the earlier patches cut it down....seems we need a new one for that [:)]

Of course, the more memory the better. There are a few tweaks you can do with a 32 bit system to squeeze out a little extra memory, but it involves turning off several of your basic windows features and I do not recommend it, especially if you do not have experience with windows tweaks.

As others have pointed out, a 64 bit system with a minimum of 4GB of memory is best for the larger (1000 or 1400) star maps.
