AI Flanking

Post by junk2drive »

I played a battle today that will come with the game. 1500 map with only a few AFVs on each side. I won't give the details and spoil it.
There are a few contested flags diagonal to the map. I spread my forces out and moved forward toward the flags. It took quite a few turns to make contact. The AI ignored the flags and sent some of its force wide right and left. Soon I was caught in a crossfire. I had even left some units lagging for overwatch. I had a few taken out head on and scored a couple myself. But in the end I lost. The AI had been able to keep my units pointed in one direction while moving in for side shots from another.

A question for you...

Which nationality were you playing?

I was Soviet. MR made it plus a version from the German side and another for head to head.

If I play it again I will surely spread my force out further.

Essentially, that's what I wanted to hear. Having been exposed to MR's thoughts on Russian tactics, I wouldn't have thought that they'd have done the who "out-flanking" maneuver. Count this as a well-done.

A nice feature in battles with maneuver is the variable playback. Being able to fast forward through the playback at 10 times normal while my units were getting to contact was great for an impatient person like me.

I use 10x speed to get my tanks with track damage (30% normal movement) regrouped with their platoons for a second or third go.

[:D] I have NO IDEA where you might have been to find my thoughts on Russian tactics...I've never posted on that subject anywhere before....well, maybe just once....
I wouldn't have thought that they'd have done the who "out-flanking" maneuver.

I'm surprised to hear that as well but glad that they do. That scenario is a major cat and mouse between 2 opponents and playtesting showed it to do well in vs AI modes as well.

I'm a firm believer that scenarios don't do well in more than 1 mode of play. Whether that be H2H, Axis vs AI, or Allied vs AI. So I made a scenario for all 3 modes.

Good Hunting.

Rick and I played the H2H version yesterday. The result was about the same as my solo game.

This is a nice map that can be used in random battles or the editor.

I opened the scenario in the scenario editor, removed the units, and gave the Germans PZVIG and the Russians T34/76 43. Then saved it with a different name. Rick gets the Germans this time.

Actually, no, there's not. It's a city fight.

Were you Soviets this time as well?

Junk was German in our H2H game of Dang. Information. my rounds didn't do much damage to his pumas. And I had a hard time getting a good LOS to them. He picked me off one at a time. I ended up only getting one of his Pumas, and at the end I had 1 T70 left.

But it was fun anyway. One of those where I think about what I might try differently the next time. In the game Paul set up after that, he's playing Russian and has given me a different set of german units.

Thanks
rick
