Crewmen: the dead that live

Post by Lucullus »

I've noticed a problem ever since I got version 4.0 yet was not in 3.0. When crewmen bail out of a vehicle (for argument sake let's say only two survive the conflagration) the troop icon often many more men than survived. So in the example of the two that survived, there may be four men in the icon even thought the number says 2.
Is this a problem with my computer or is there a bug? The problem still exists in v. 4.4.
Thanks.

No, not a bug, but rather "Fog of War". It is a function of the Limited Intel button in the preference screen. As, in the real world, you would not expect to know the exact number of men in ever one of your oppenent's squads, so too in the game you can choose not to know these numbers. If you want to "count heads", turn off Limited Intel".

This happens even with my own crewmen. I tried your suggestion in "Brave men of Betio". I had my two crewmen bail out of an Alligator by pressing the "9" button. Immediately a four man icon appears even with the limited intelligence off. This would be OK except that an Alligator only has a two man crew. Is there any other suggestions as to what may be happening.
Thanks.

Don't get so anal about the icon. It is just a representation. The icon doesn't tell you how many men are there. The icon can only tell you if this is a 'big' squad or a 'small' squad.

You need to turn on the "show number" (can't remember right name) in the preferences menu. There is an option in the preferences where you can have the computer put a glowing number over each of your squads. This will tell you exactly how many men are there.

Shouldn't the troop icon be accurate on your own troops and abstract on enemy troops?

Look, I know I'm being very anal about this. I'm a very anal person. Nevertheless, for my own peace of mind, are others experiencing the same "problem" when you have either small squads or crews on the screen.

Sure, I see the the same thing, Lucullus, and no, I don't think you are "anal". But... I personally don't see it as a problem. I never was one for "counting heads". If I want to know the number of men, I turn on "Unit Numbers" for infantry in the preferences. Then I know the exact number at a glance.

I had the same problem and also thought at first that it was the game or my computer, but then I figured out that the number of men was indicated by the number above the unit icon and not the old way, by how many men were in the icon.

BEcause there is only one set of icons, the "fog of war" applies to both sides. You can have teh number tell you exactly how many troops your units have, but in order to make it so you can't "count little heads" to know exactly what you are facing, the icons only give in general how many men are presant.

THe numbers will be right, but the number of little men in the icon will not be. THere was no easy way to make it accurate for your side and not the enemy.

Gentlemen, I was instructed to make the icons this way, I myself kept the old set, I like to count heads, but most don't?! If there is enough interest, I may ask Fabio and Rick to post the originals, I have 'em, but not going to send them out by E-mail. I'll start a thread to vote at, and we'll see, sound fair?

Personally I don't count heads, if one of my units can see the enemy unit I go to that unit right click on the enemy and read the bottom of the screen for an acurrate count.

I like both counting the little heads and the numbers.
