How do you succeed with the Unn?

So obviously you are supposed to make a living by pirating for booty since you won't get any income from taxes or colonies in general (appears you can't build arks, at all). There are a few problems with that:

- Fleet upkeep is very high right from the beginning. You only have a set number of turns before your economy tanks if you don't do something, quick.

- Your only source of income is booty and the odd lvl 1 mine

- You don't get enough income from booty because there aren't enough vulnerable targets to raid. A few tachyon scanners and mines are all you will get. Once you start attacking they stop building booty and concentrate on turrets. Once a colony has 15+ turrets you can forget about raiding it.

- You won't be able build research to tech up for better weapons due to the lack of income and, once again, high upkeep and cost of research buildings. That means you'll get outteched and raiding becomes impossible.

Yeah, I've tried the Unn a couple times, but I cannot seem to make a go with them. Probably part of that is simply my personality (I'm generally a "turtler" at heart), but also their racial advantages/bonuses seem to be outweighed by their disadvantages/penalties. Maybe they thrive on a certain type of map?

Yeah, they really need to have lower upkeep for their ships and/or be able to capture ships from other players.
The Unn were given some love, but they still need some more.

In a game I was playing before SN, I managed to buy their Base Ships and "Raiders" and I was about to use them on one of their bases. It was kind of fun/ny. Haven't tried that on SN, but that aspect was improved.

The AI seems to play by different rules when it controls the Unn. I conquered a planet of theirs with around 40 Unn on it 50 turns into the game. It isn't possible to grow that fast for a human player...

They do have some pop in their Base Ships, but that doesn't sound right. Aer you sure they were Unn?

It took me awhile to realize you start with 4 fleets with 4 baseships in different corners of the starmap when playing Unn.

In the 12 Races scenario, yes, but in random maps they start with only 3 fleets.

(appears you can't build arks, at all).

Notice that in order to build any ark ship, you need at least 10 pop of your own race in the colony.

I found out they were the Unn Foundation who do settle bases, so it made sense after all.
