Training command?

Post by emorbius44 »

I'ver tried doing a search and can't seem to get anything to come up. The question is just what is its function in the game? Does it increase the training level, keep it from dropping as fast or none of those? If it does something how many pilots have to be in there to have an effect?

thanks;

It helps speed up the rate that trainee pilots advance in skill. You need to have 80+ skill pilots and they then can be moved out of squadrons into the training command. Probably a good thing for the Japanses player. I have not found that it matters much for the Allied player.

Agreed that many allied powers have so many pilots that it is not important. For the powers that dont have a plethera of pilots, exp 81 pilots in training command are useful.

My experience with on-map training has been that the greener the pilot (very low experience) the faster they get to skill 70 in their chosen skill, in some cases before reaching experience 50. Cant say why, but there it is. I always take the lowest experience pilots into the squadrons that train my pilots upto combat muster. Just rotate the pilots that reach 70 (or your target #) and backfill. Painless and simple. Takes about 120 days on average in my experience.

I've noticed that in some training squadrons pilots gain experience as well as the specific skill assigned, but in other training squadrons pilots seem to gain the specific skill but not experience. The whole roster can stay in the 30s for experience yet in the 60s for the specific skill. Am I observing badly or does this happen to you?

To get back to the thread, if I recall correctly there is no benefit to adding pilots with 80+ experience to training squadrons (unless their inspiration rate is high, i.e. experience is not relevant to the speed of pilot training in that squadron). Is that right? If not, I'll strip my experienced pilots from the training command and distribute them among training squadrons.

Putting "training" sqds on actual missions increases experience. After I get all my fighter pilots to around 70 in skill, for example, I then set the sqdn to escort and let them fly cap, even in CONUS. Their experience then goes up. Once at 65 or so, I suck them away to begin dispatching some IJN or IJA homeboys to Valhalla. (Mixed ethnic/cultural references intended, if a little too subtle for some of you, and too offensive for others of you.)

But you are confusing your mythology. If the japs really were going to Valhalla, then they would be vikings and they might be sending your boys to where they thought they were supposted to go. In either case no one gets any virgins [X(]

The Japs are going to Valhalla via the time honoured traditional mode of transport aka a burning warship.

There still seems to be a misunderstanding of the mythology involved (don't you love how threads go off track lol). From Wikipedia (emphis mine)

In Norse mythology, Valhalla (from Old Norse Valhöll "hall of the slain"[1]) is a majestic, enormous hall located in Asgard, ruled over by the god Odin. Chosen by Odin, half of those that die in combat travel to Valhalla upon death, led by valkyries, while the other half go to the goddess Freyja's field Fólkvangr. In Valhalla, the dead join the masses of those who have died in combat known as Einherjar, as well as various legendary Germanic heroes and kings, as they prepare to aid Odin during the events of Ragnarök. Before the hall stands the golden tree Glasir, and the hall's ceiling is thatched with golden shields. Various creatures live around Valhalla, such as the stag Eikþyrnir and the goat Heiðrún, both described as standing atop Valhalla and consuming the foliage of the tree Læraðr.

Japan follows Mahāyāna Buddhism which believes

Under various conditions, the realms Buddha presides over could be attained by devotees after their death so, when reborn, they could strive towards buddhahood in the best possible conditions. Depending on the sect, this salvation to “paradise” can be obtained by faith, imaging, or sometimes even by the simple invocation of the Buddha’s name. This approach to salvation is at the origin of the mass appeal of devotional Buddhism, especially represented by the Pure Land (浄土宗).

This is paralleled by Bushidō

The bushidō philosophy cover methods of raising children, appearance, and grooming, but all of this may be seen as part of one's constant preparation for death — to die a good death with one's honor intact, the ultimate aim in a life lived according to bushidō. Indeed, a "good death" is its own reward, and by no means assurance of "future rewards" in the afterlife. Notable samurai, though certainly not all (e.g. Amakusa Shiro), have throughout history held such aims or beliefs in disdain, or expressed the awareness that their station — as it involves killing — precludes such reward, especially in Buddhism. On the contrary, the soul of a noble warrior suffering in hell or as a lingering spirit is a common motif in Japanese art and literature. Bushidō, while exhibiting the influence of Dao through Zen Buddhism, is a philosophy in contradistinction to religious belief, with a deep commitment to propriety in this world for propriety's sake.

So mucking about with pilots and TRACOM as the allied player isn't worth the time and effort? Is this the consensus view?

After much trial and error as the Allied player I have got to admit that so far I have not seen much benefit to putting 81+ pilots into Training command.  I generally only put such pilots there so they can rest up prior to returning to combat.  There is some boost to pilots in training but not a lot.

For instance, last month in my game I had five Navy pilots in TRACOM and at the end of the month 55 pilots advanced from month 5 to month 7 and 77 pilots from month 7 to month 9.  Was that worth five top pilots being out of combat?  I am not sure.

As to training I fill a training unit with green pilots that are usually at or around 30 in exp and air.  I leave the unit on sweep or escort training until a large number of them are at or above 70 in air.  I then shift them to naval attack or ground attack so that they will gain EXP faster.  Once a pilot gets to 60 exp and 70 air I release them for combat.  I try to get them to 65 Exp if I can.  but sometimes you need pilots sooner.  It also seems to help if the squadron commander is a good leader.

My Allied PBEM opponent would concur with this, I'm sure.

Throughout the first year of the campaign, we kept each other abreast of TRACOM pilot pulls through the system. He had fewer TRACOM instructors than I did and realized very little benefit from it. Some of the accelerated pilots were also Soviet or Chinese pilots. He didn't have any Soviet or Chinese pilots in TRACOM. Finally, a few months ago he abandoned the system and dispersed the TRACOM pilots back into squadron service.

Let me ask a basic question. I really should know this, but I dont...

Pilots in the reserve pools not assigned to sqaudrons / not in sqaudron reserve - do they ever increase in experience or skill, and if so under what mechanism?

TRACOM pilots work on the pre-pools, and training inside squadrons takes care of in-game. So is there a mechanism, even automatic that takes care of the others?

Anybody notice an increase in Ops losses with raw pilots in training or combat squadrons? My Ops losses are thru the roof with little to no air combat. Even transferring units to another base seems to cost me an aircraft everytime or at least 2-3 damaged. I watch the weather conditions over bases to insure I'm not flying in severe storms and such, but are the Ops losses simply bad luck or a product of inexperienced pilots trashing the darned things?

Nope, there is no mechanism to "train" pilots who are in the reserve pools. They are on the sidelines, waiting to get called into the game.

Indeed, low experience pilots are more likely to have ops losses.
