......
EDIT: Or better question, how do I get the BEST defensive set with the MOST chance of getting a close assault and/or best shot?

Also will my unit AI EVER do its own close assault on its own when I don't have the ability to control it or will it just sit there with an optimum chance of doing something but won't because I didn't order it to?

Using Defend HOLD for CLose Assault should give you the best chance. Set SOP to aggressive.

and yes, the AI will close assault when the Enemy tank is close enough.

Thanks

Thanks Rick you've been very helpful. [:)]

Seems getting used to and understanding these SOP settings is key to good tactical orders.

I guess I'd have to ask the question now: Why would anyone ever use "cautious"? Routing/retreating units in the face of the enemy is not a very good tactic especially into their main line of site.

Part of 6.1.6 Close Combat
Infantry that is in Close Assault range gets one Close Assault attack per phase. The base Close
Assault Chance is 1 in 10, or 10%, modified by the factors listed below, but the chance is never
reduced below 10%. Assaulting armored vehicles is not easy, but the rewards can be great in
terms of the relative value of a tank versus an infantry squad.

Close combat against vehicles is more effective against the side or rear of a vehicle and against
open topped vehicles. Moving vehicles are harder to close assault and stationary infantry have
a better chance to close assault than moving infantry. Experience also has a significant effect
in the success of a close assault and suppressed infantry will not generally be able to conduct a
successful close assault and broken infantry cannot close assault at all. If all goes well and the
close assault succeeds, the chance of causing damage to the vehicle is roughly 50%, but this
can result in everything from track damage up to and including the destruction of the vehicle.
