Mission Accomplished

Post by Le Ricain »

"On September 5th, 1944, the Imperial Japanese government accepted the Allied surrender terms, it was announced today from Supreme Allied HQ in Osaka. Allied Supreme Commander, General Douglas MacArthur, stated that ongoing military operations had been suspended as of 06:00 today..."

What a wonderful game. Today, I finished my first GC as the Allies. As can be seen from my join date, this game took me 1 year-3 months-28 days to complete and I enjoyed every minute of it.

In the beginning, I tried 2 day turns, but with my inexperience and need to redo turns, it was not practical to sit through two days of turn announcements multiple times. I found myself running the whole game on single day turns. Oh well, maybe next time.

Certain aspects of the game are done really well. I especially enjoyed the air game. Everything from pilot training programs to listing aces...it was all well done. One question though - towards the end my bombing campaigns of airfields and heavy industry was starting fires. How did I do that?

I would have like the same sort of attention to detail for the submarine warfare. It would have been a nice touch if there had been a folder listing individual submarine accomplishments. I stll remember when one of my subs sank five IJN ships in a single 24 hour period in the straits of Tsushima. Such a log would have a more practical use for analysing the effectiveness of submarines and assigned hunting locations. Also, I never figured out ASW aircraft operations.

It was probably just me, but I never figured out mine warfare either. I tried mining the landing beaches in the Philippines in 1941 and never did get the hang of it. As the AI does not seem to use mines either, this part of the game never really took off for me.

The key to the game is supply and this is done especially well in the game. One needs to really keep on top of the supply situation.

The best part lies with the game's design. Although, as the Allied player you have complete freedom to do whatever you think best, if you follow logic and the flow of the game, you find yourself following in the steps of the original Alied planners. Many was the time I found myself thinking, "Ah, that is why they did that." Guadalcanal, the Marianas, Midway, even the Coral Sea, all make perfect sense to me as parts of the War in the Pacific. All of this is done without using events to guide the player. The design of the game is enough.

Thank you and well done. Thanks also to everyone who helped me in the forum.

Yeah, this is the bit that really "does it" for me. I find my pbem with another player generally follows reality without even any nudging to do it. Guadalcanal happened at almost the exact same time, and as I've battled up the Solomons the islands fall more or less within a month or two of their historical dates. The same is true in CENTPAC. And just like in reality my landing on Guadalcanal happened on a shoestring, at a desperate time for the Allies when it was becoming critical to just get the US into the war somehow to try and draw off IJ strength. Even my motivations as a player, the operational and strategic goals, match those of RL commanders.

But there is still obvious scope to make your own history, my SEAC campaign bears no resemblence to reality at all for either side, but the constraints of the game reality seem to generally match the contraints of IRL remarkably well.

Indeed, this is in my "cool_things_to_implement_in_AE" wishlist also.

Or for a bit more of a challenge against the AI, play as Japan. Nice thing about this game, it is replayable.

Thanks for all the comments. Plenty to think about: PBEM or playing Japan against AI.

Yeah, but not much. I ruined Japanese economy totally, but still I'm kicking American butt even in summer 43. My carriers are afloat, Allied are not. That's the main reason.
