Overlord vs VikingNo2

Post by VikingNo2 »

Situation

Germany ( Overlord ) vs US ( VikingNo2 )
13k
Air defalt
10% arty
July 1943

First turn Overlord drops smoke all along the front lines, I hit a hill in the center and the reverse slopes in the south. Both of us smoke the same areas. There is going to be some point blank range fighting in the middle. Recon elements spot a tiger, arty is called on its position.

Overlord is a new opponent for me lets see what he has got

VikingNo2 has the advantage in this one. The terain is more in his favor and he haad the distinct pleasure of starting with 2 of the 3 middle vh clusters located behind his starting postition and the last cluster is in the middle of an open area.

The soldiers of the Reich will have their work cut out for them in this one.

The Tiger the US dropped some arty on was routed, but a simple reminder to the crew from their commander about how thick their armor was brough the crew to their senses and they calmed right down.

Many US recon units have been spotted. I picked off a jeep, dukw, a recon patrol and inflicted casualties on a couple other units.

Received som pesky at gun fire while positioning units but no damage was done.

Recon elements push through the smoke to see what the Fatherland has sent at us, several recon units report in ( there was a slight delay in reports, something about having to change underware ) HQ counts at least 20 + tank of all types:eek: Pz- IVs, Panthers, and a Tiger is spotted as well. Other recon elements suffer under accurate 75mm arty fire:(

A 57mm AT gun takes out a PZ-IV in the center and a Wolverine causes another, in the north, crew to bail. Smoke has to be dropped in the north. The forces are to stong I have to move some armor up there to meet the threat.

The southern portion of the map is quite I move foward but find no badguys:D

P.S. The VHex where not behinde my starting position, I had to run to them.

turn 2

Post by TheOverlord »

VikingNo2 is pushing forward with recon units. Picked off a couple of them (patrol, 1/2 track) inflicted some casualties on other units (infantry, mg's). Spotted a number of annoying at guns and have been hammered them and inflicting casualties.

40mm aa gun and a couple of wolverines in good postions in the north take pot shots. They miss. Na na.

Drop more arty on US positions.

Tigers cautiously advance in the center and claim a couple of VH's. Wohoo!

I commend VikingNo2 on his use of smoke and tree cover. He has managed to get into some excellent positions forcing my units to risk runs accross open spaces......but there are ways of dealing with that :)

King of Battle

I believe all tubes on both sides fire this turn.

This turn recon forces spot more tanks and there infantry support:eek: In the south recon halftracks with panthers are probing.

In the North, my forces come under heavy arty fire. As well as a smoke screen is layed down to cover the German advance.

The Tiger that took the center Vhes, is destroyed, it spun around to take on a sount team and a 57mm APCR round tool it out from behind:cool: ( I love it when a plan comes together ) Another scout team Immoblizes a Feirdinan ( spelling ) and drops smoke in front of it.

US recon forces are every where. I feel their eyes watching me as I move. There is no place to hide from their spying eyes......

The poor Germans have no tree cover to note and are forced to maneuver in the open with a few hills to hide behind.....not a good situation as their prized armor is slowly being picked off by at guns and suppressed by 81mm mortars.:(

There will be no sneaky armor strikes for the Reich in this game.
The tactics must change.....

So, northern armor and infantry are faced with the choice of advance or pull away.....they advance! More US recon units destroyed along with a bozooka team. German forces advance accross the open terrain into the US held woods north of the northern most vh's.....the battle in there will be bloody.

Central forces settle in to better cover and take a more defensive stance. **** arty shells dropping like rain around them.

Southern units continue to probe. Advance US infantry units are spotted. Another US bazooka team is dispatched, infantry is forced to retreat, and mg unit receives casualties and pushed off its perch on a hill.

Back to VikingNo2.

Finally...

Post by TheOverlord »

Ok, this one went a little better than the other turns, for Germany anyways.

Took out an AT gun and a Greyhound:p

Chasing down infantry in the woods. I have come accross US Airborne units and inflicted casualties and dropped a little 75mm love down upon their heads. Still have some more AT and AA guns to deal with....gotta be careful....I've lost too many armor units as it is.

Central forces quiet this round....trying to rally mostly:(

As for the south, infantry units swap fire, eliminating a US rifle squad.

Viking has excellent positions.....must keep probing for weak spots.....

Post by TheOverlord »

The battle in the north continues. Germany pushes ahead destroying a couple of half tracks, 60mm mortar jeep and dukw. Infantry units on both sides take casualties.

Fighting continues for control of center VH's.

Southern area quiet. US recon patrol destroyed.

the battle rages

Post by TheOverlord »

Ok, another bloody turn.

In the south, a Panther goes DUKW hunting and bags one.
Other than that, pretty quiet.

In the center, a sneaky group of US rangers make an appearance in a stone house and take out an '88 gun right in front of them:mad: but, the big bad wolf blows down their house and they run for it....and are cut to peices.
That'll learn ya ta take out my 88's!;)

In the north, it is another ugly turn.
German infantry strolls right into a waiting US engineer squad and are promptly fried....sorry guys.
Other German forces press the attack destroying 2 htracks, a mortar, a mg jeep and a bazooka squad. Infantry units on both sides take casualties.

I see Panthers everywhere:(

As well and many Tigers. I trying to figure out where the weakness in his force is. He spent allot of money on High priced tanks, but so far I am just trying to hold the line. I think my number is up this game. I snipe a few Pz-IV this turn not much else

I think just about every unit I have moved and/or fired this turn.
Had to finish it up this morning, it was getting to late last night.

Any how, for those of you following, Viking has a wonderful tactic of sending out a swarm of recon squads, mg's and bazooka teams to harrass the sh*t out of advancing units. AT guns and wolverines hide behind the screen and pick off my panzers and half tracks....

He has been doing this the whole game and the best I have had to show in return is a few half tracks and some greyhounds. I have focused on finding and destroying his screens on about half the map, but have been aggressivly attacking for the past 5 turns or so on the other half (and paying a high price for it) to try simply using brute force to blast through the screen and knock some of the teeth out of his forces.

AT, AA guns and waiting infantry have been chewing me up, particuarly in an area of woods to the north....and those d*mn wolverines keep skirting just out of reach.

I think I have finally got the infantry on the run in the woods. It has been a costly turn for me, loosing a number of my own squads (and one group Ge Inf idiots imobilized their own Panther with grenades  ) as I pushed forward. I have finally claimed my first of his armor units - a sherman (yeah I know, nothing to get excited about but the way it has been going so far, I will take it)......not the wolverines I want, that have been plagueing me this whole game:mad:

The battle in the woods for the northern vh is a costly one but it is starting to look like I might get it......if I will have enough left over to hold it is another story.....I am sure there are alot more fresh wolverines out there....

I dont know if my aggressive move will pay off...it has been a toss up so far.....and several stupid moves left a few too many units vulnerable :( so we shall see.....

Trying to make the Germans pay for the woods, Overlord has used his 75mm arty well this game. Did manage to take out a Panther a several halftracks, I got to make his infantry less mobile if I hope to pull this one out.

Actually its not the turn. I got yours, played mine and am trying to post it back.

There is either something up with the forum or my browser (more likely) that wont let me post attachments. I just get a balnk page.

I hate troubly shooting my own pc when I am not working...

If I cant resolve the issue I can either post it on monday from work (no problems doing it from there...) or send it to you directly....

So, I had to send the turn directly until I resolve my issues....

So, for those following along, this is what happened....

German forces continue pushing the US out of the northern woods. A mg jeep, greyhound, couple of half tracks, several inf squads and pazooka team destroyed. Turret of a wolverine is damaged at the cost of a Panzer  not a good trade....

Additional Ge forces launch assault at the northern vh. Mortar team destroyed and some serious pain delivered to a 40mm aa gun.

Center forces swap fire.

SOuthern Ge and US forces continue to push against each other. Mg squad destoyed.
