Eagle, or Pheasant?

Post by Goblin »

Ok. It is June of 1944. The push inland from Normandy. WBW Western Europe-Central France map. It is dusk, visibility 17. I am directing a local German counter-attack, while Orzel is pushing forward with the numerically superior Americans.

7220 points, 10% artillery, no paratroops or infiltrators (no time!). Here is the catch.... We are going to play this from the other side also. I will be the Americans next, while he will take the Germans. Two matches (thanks to Redleg for the suggestion). What is more fair than that?

Can Orzel live up to the name Eagle? Or will he be shot like a Pheasant?

Lets do this...

Bloodshed has begun

Post by Goblin »

My forward units have seen no American soldiers yet. They did witness a spectacular explosion, followed by pieces of halftrack falling from the sky, where our rocket barrage fell.

Your close cousins, the buzzards, are circling your lines already...:D

Lets rumble!

The buzzards get to eat...

Post by Orzel Bialy »

but not on my men...they got to pick and peck at the remains of four infantry units and the crew of a PzIV, all of which got caught in a major firefight.
Further recon efforts discovered a very large formation of PzIV's to the south...almost as if they were looking to pull off a flanking manuever?!?!?
Lots of smoke being popped left and right...most to by me to keep those long 75's of Goblin's at bay for at least a little while. :)

Ok then Goblin...let's see where the bulk of your force is hiding. ;)

Oh the Horror...

Post by Orzel Bialy »

this one folks is a major bloodbath!!!

I mean there are burning vehicles everywhere...tanks popping shots when they have a clear LOS over a countryside quickly being covered by smoke.

There are infantry firefights errupting all over...as squads bump heads and pummel each other...recon elements are spotting enemy units in the center (panthers) and up north (PzIV's).

It's ugly...let's just leave it at that.

Well Goblin...we always said one of these days we'd have a real slaughter on our hands...looks like this is the one!

Yes, it is very bad. Was everyone aware that the price of a four man German MG was more than a .50 and .30 cal armed halftrack? Yep.

There is so much American equipment, that he can waste two units to get one, and still have more than me. He is not losing at a two to one, so it is very bad. I will fight on, but I still cannot wait to be the US, so the helpless feeling of being the mighty German war machine goes away...

The fight for the southern victory hexes rages heaviest. Any of my infantry that are seen are shredded by 2 or 3 mobile machinegun nests and SPAA vehicles, plus the infantry in the tracks. I don't have much left. There is a Wolverine (at least one) on the southern map edge, trying to flank my PzIV's. My Panthers in the north spot a 60mm mortar team climbing up on a roof to set their mortar up, and start slamming shells into it.

Here comes the US artillery...

Surrender Goblin....Needless Lives Being Lost...

Post by Orzel Bialy »

I have all the victory hex groupings but one...and plenty of infantry and armor support to defend them.

I lost 2 HT's to a well placed "bottleneck" in the center...but not to fret, there are more where that came from! I punished a couple more infantry units that I found guarding a PAK...I will soon have it isolated and once I crack his position here will be able to flood through the center of Goblin's line I think.

To the south his PzIV's have pulled back behind the smoke...tired of playing with my tank hunter groups I guess eh?

To the north some Panthers mill about...ducking behind trees to avoid the eyes of my scouts...but I have some good observation posts that allow me to see a good distance, so I know they are there...along with some PzIV's a bit further north.

Duck Gob!!! Here comes the rain...courtesy of the US Army Artillery units....Merry X-Mas! :D

I actually did almost hit the F9. I bought the best I could, and have been on the defensive from turn one. I shouldn't have wasted points on infantry. There are so many mobile MG nests (1/2 tracks) that they are worthless. None of this is your fault, so I will stop bitching.

I struggled to find anyone that would fight! I succeeded, somewhat. A tank that had been immobilized is now in action again, so some small amount of good news comes my way...

Compliments to Orzel, as he seems to have NOT overloaded on cheap heavy guns. He mainly seems to have on-board stuff (so-far).

Well, you know where the Panthers are, so come get them. I see your hunters. Wolverines and 76mm armed Shermans. LEO?!? Did you cut the cost on Wolverines?!? I bought on a computer campaign (7.1) last night, and they were 400 something for 4. Now they are 200 some odd points for four! Not good for the Germans....

Anyways, I can still bleed you, so I didn't hit the F9. :D

I tried to be Fair...

and not overload on the cheap stuff...so I spread it around.

You aren't facing 20 Wolverines...or 50 jeeps with 50 bazooka teams...or 50 Shermans...though compared to your forces, you are still probably outnumbered somewhat.

I thought about it (swamping you) don't get me wrong...but then I figured I want to beat you fair and square...as well as the fact that I'll have to you be your shoes in the next fight!

OK...The Christmas Truce is Over...

Post by Orzel Bialy »

back to kicking your @ss!

I found two of the PzIV's that Goblin had pulled back in the south. A long range duel between them and a single Wolverine went very well for me...two more burning German hulks litter the field of battle.
Goblin grabbed one or two of the VH's in the southern most "clump"...but after offering up a unit for the good of the team, I can see they are only infantry. Goblin appeared to be attempting to move up some units in support...but some of my HT's caught them in the open and routed them. Arty will soon do the rest...RIP for those poor schmucks!
In the center it seems Goblin has set up an inter-locking defensive line of ATG's, infantry and AFV's...all very well placed to form natural choke points. However, here I can be wasteful to some degree to achieve my goals. Attrition is my ally...Gob can't afford it.
I spotted two more Jdpz's (Jpanthers!!!) in the center...waiting in ambush. Thanks to my recon units...they will wait in vain! The story is the same up north...Gob is on the defensive and all I am doing is smelling his positions out one by one. Then they will get "the treatment" and then there will be holes in that line of yours Gob...and I shall flood them.... Ah yes!!!
Surrender Goblin....you can't defend the entire front with what you have left...I dare say that you have been whooped!!!

Duel?!?! DUEL!?!? My a$$! You pulled out, fired. One return shot (missed of course), and then you blew them both to he!l. The PzIV series is about as worthless as it gets in this game. I have had LOTS better performance out of the M4, and that's not a joke. I have had a couple of M4's and a couple of Wolverines now throw back an entire company of PzIV's, and the ALLIES WERE ATTACKING!!!! I also had a hidden PzIV fire 4 or 5 close range shots at a Wolverine, from a hull down cover position, and missed every shot.

I know you have won. I did not surrender this turn as a Christmas present to you. You can beat on me another turn. I got charged alot of points for alot of worthless junk. I think the only way left to play is with even stats, so the prices get at least a little closer. I know nothing supposedly changed in the mod as far as the True Troop adjustments go, but something DID.
