Vessel classification

Post by Milo »

Is there anyway to see a vessel class besides clicking of the name?

I would like to be able to tell with class a ship is (esp the IJN) in order to place them in the correct TF. Some type of abbreviation beside the name would be helpful.

At this point, no. But yes it would useful to have the class information available (altho they've already got alot packed into the displays already, it might be difficult for them to find the room...)

Make it a floating box that appears if you hold the mouse over a ship's name.

You mean class aka CV/CA/CL/DD ? or do you mean what really matters, like Anti Air DD, ASW DD, etc?

One is nice to have, the other would be SUPER useful to be able to see when putting together task forces! Having to look at a ships actual weapons to tell what it it is a bit of a chore for those of us Atlantic folks who are new to Pacific wargames ;)

I think Milo was talking about the class, as in the "Sims class" or the "Sendi class", not the classification such as DD, CA etc (as this information is already available on the TF creation and TF information screens). It took me sec to figure out what he was asking, but it's certainly true that the semantics are very simlar.

I kinda guessed that, but to us non Pacific folks who don't know the classes well, it's just as greek ... It would be really helpful in conjunction with this that the type? of ship was explained too, aka ASW, AA, etc.

This was what I was trying to say, and not doing a very good job at it
:)

Many of the IJN DDs are very good at surface combat and bad at the anti air mission. I would be nice to see the class ie Fubiki, ect. It would be easy to create a data base for which class is good at what mission.

Can't you just right click on them while in the ship selection screen?

If you right click on it, it does give a good amount of information as to what the ship is capable of. I just found that function the other evening and it is most helpful.

As long as we're discussing what would be helpful, how about adding what the ships' ASW rating is inside of the ship info screen. The AA rating is there, but I don't see the ASW rating.

I'm not talking about the "add ships to TF screen", where you can right-click to get that info....but I'm talking when you go into the port screen and click on a specific ship to get it's detailed info. Inside this screen I can see what weapons it has, it's endurance, it's AA rating...but curiously, no little one line ASW rating.

Good point. I didn't even known ships had an ASW rating until I accidently discovered you can see it via the TF selection screen.

Now if only there was a way to find out which ships have radar...

Hello...

There is really no such thing as an ASW rating. In the limited room allowed in the "add ships to TF screen", I wanted to let the player know if the ship had depth charges or something to drop on submarines, so I added together all ASW weapons on board and used the sum.

In the individual ship screen, the player can see all the ASW weapons, so there was no need to add them together.

Hope this clarifies....

Can we have one?

Would like each ship/class to have AA, ASW, SURF Combat or Bombard rating.

There is, Veer. All you have to do is go into the port screen, and look at an indiviual ship. After you bring that screen up, click on the "Weapons data" link at the bottom. You will see all the various guns, Depth charge racks and radar(if any).

LOL! And all this time I thought there was some secret formula that denoted the sub-killers from the run-of-the-mill DD's! :D

Thanks for the explanation, Mike. Isn't it amazing how much misunderstanding can be cleared up when game developers tell us little bits of info such as this?

Veer,

Yes, you can click on the individual ship to see what weapons it has, and what radar it has (if any).

Be advised that VERY FEW of the IJN ships have ANY radar. The only IJN vessals that have radar, are the ones that need them the least.

The Yagumo class DDs (there are about 8 - 10 of them, none avail at start tho) have both air and surface radars.

There is also a CL class that has radar, I don't remember the name tho.

My brother (Knavey) is doing a little digging, and has found documentation that showed that the BB Ise (alone, not the entire class) had radar also. But he's got to finish his homework on when it was operational and such before presenting the information. But very few IJN ships had radar. They very much relied on their float-plane and those huge "pagoda" masts for spotting threats.

On the other hand, just about all US ships have radar. The smaller ships (DDs) have the SC radar (suface), the larger ships have SG (surface) radar, and the CVs all have CXAM or CPS-1 radars (air).
