Refreshing !!

Unity of Command lets you replay the epic conflict that was the Stalingrad Campaign of World War II. In this turn-based game of strategy and cunning, observe how opportunity leads the German army to advance recklessly into the steppes of southern Russia. And as the story unfolds, join the Soviet campaign to repel the invaders... As these legendary battles play out on the hex board, the tension of decision making and difficulties of conducting operations on a massive scale emerge. Command armies and fronts in maneuver warfare, thrust and encircle, capture cities and cross continents; but never, ever forget to watch your supply lines. The Red Turn expansion ads a gigantic Soviet expansion centered on the Kursk campaign.

Refreshing !!

Post by bill hunter »

Downloaded UC on a bit of a whim to be honest ( bit of a collector ) and gee im glad i did!! The most refreshing hex based game in years and like many ive played most of em over the last 25 years.First rate presentation, completely original. intuitive gameplay and at the same time very subtle.Short sharp scenarios almost perfectly balanced, all in all an excellent representation of the operational art. Whats more 100 percent stable so far.

my one gripe, can we please, please have a turn one specialist allocation!!

anyways , congrats to all involved !!!

I must agree -- I bought Time of Fury yesterday and was sort of disappointed in the interface (the game itself seems very solid, it just looks like it was designed circa 2001) so on a whim I bought Unity today and have been playing all afternoon.  This is probably the slickest war game interface I've ever seen, and there's quite a bit of nice 'crunchy' war game detail as well (supply rules, specialist units, unit experience, airpower, etc.).

I'm very impressed with this game -- it's a rare war game that looks completely modern, has a slick intuitive interface, but still holds true to the basics of good old fashioned hex map wargaming.  Nice job!

Now, we just need a grand campaign... [8D]

Was this game always for $29.99?  It looks like it went up in price or am I just off on the game?

Troy Goodfellow at Flash of Steel has a brief post up and it looks like he, too, is finding UNITY to be 'refreshing':

Later, I will want to talk about other things – the campaign structure, the scenario design, how it deals with fog of war and air combat, prestige as a currency…There is a lot of real game design going on in this game that looks a little bit cute with its toy tanks and giant heads fighting in the Ukraine.  But for now, I think, I’ve found the gateway wargame I’ve been looking for for some time.

Okay, I caved in and bought the game!!

It really is great, and I am currently slowly inching towards trying to win the Rostov scenario. I tell you it's depressing to see it listed as easy as I keep getting my butt kicked in it!!

The AI reminds me a bit of how the AI in SC WW1 works in the WW2 mod. Drives units into the rear of the enemy when there is often no chance of them surviving. That needs to be toned down a bit. But it's a challenging game, beautiful (even the little busts have grown on me) and this is the only game I've ever owned that I keep the sound track on. I LOVE it!

Very well done![&o]

I agree, it's a gem. And also the suicide charges by the AI to cut supply lines is a little much!!

After playing the game to bits, that is my major issue. The AI will send 1 or 2 or 3 divisions through a tiny gap to seize a bridge 100KMs behind the "front" and sit there to be destroyed with no support. Although the AI succeeds in diverting player units from the schwerpunkt to hurry back and kill them - and slowing down the player's race against the clock - it is a bit gamey...

Doesn't take away from my overall excellent impression - but one to watch for future versions...

Hi guys,

re: "suicide charges", we consider those to be a problem only if they are ineffective. Remember that the AI is playing with no advantages whatsoever, so if it manages to break through your line and disrupt your entire plan that's a succes as far as we're concerned. [8D]

HOWEVER, there were situations in testing where AI charged without any chance of success. That's clearly a problem. If you see a particularly bad case of this real suicide charge, please save the game and post it in the forums so we can take look.

Thx!
