Long Campaign

Post by Great Dane »

Hello All,

I started the WWII campaign as a German, and now I am in North Africa fighting the Brits. The first battle in N.A. was an advance against an unprepared defense. Visibility 1.
Pretty tough that one was, I think I lost half my tanks. I don't remember a single time when one of my Recon or Spec Ops guys ever snuck up on anyone (unless they were supressed). I had 12 of my own, and a couple support. They all died - or are spending some time in a lovely Italian hospital on the beach in Tripoli.

It was a medium battle, but the Brits had a bunch of tanks. I think they lost close to 50 - 70. I thought that no way was I going to fight a hard battle, unless it was a defense or meeting engagement. Well, the next two combats were pushovers. One was an an assault, one was another attack vs. an unprepared defense. In both cases the Brits seemed to have very few troops (maybe 500) and never had anything other than MG scout tanks, and Vickers 3 pounders. (maybe 12 tanks total).
I got over 1000 points after each battle. Now all my PZ IIIe's are PZ IIIj's. Any my IVc's are IVe's.

Is this as it should be?

Does the campaign through in some easy battles worth lots of points so I can upgrade?
Two more battles like this and all my infantry will be either Spec Ops, or EngineersFT. And everyone will have his own H/T.

In all campaigns the game engine rewards points depending on your outcome for you to repair or upgrade your initial core forces you selected from the start. Look at it as receiving supplies prior to your next enconounter so choose wisely.

Heh, heh, if you don't want easy, after your deployment phase is over, send me your save for some 'doctoring', I'll try to relieve you of some core forces!!:D No seriously, I have guys buy/deploy my enemy forces, and throw in some surprises, makes for a much more fun campaign, the AI sucks, IMO.

Gentlemen - If we look at the early NA campaign, the Germans enjoyed a lot of success. IIRC they were getting ready to enjoy the night life in Alexandria. If the early going turns out easy for the Germans that's the way it "really was", but ought not to be later.

And as to your horrendous results in the one battle... I get to give out the standard reply:

We'd need to know what sort of things you did, what tactics and equipment you and your enemy used.

When I ran the Germans thru a WWII campaign, they ended the war with over 50K points unspent, for a core that was around 2400 points to start with, and I had all my tanks upgraded to tigerIIs and all the infantry was late FJ. After a certain point you will start seeing tanks with 100+ exp, they will then hit what they shoot at and can shoot and hit at longer range than the ai can with its fresh force of newbies each battle. If you have a large core force to start with and upgrade its value after each battle then by the end of the war the ai can't buy enough to give you an even fight even if you give it an ai boost of 20-30 exp points.

Beware your first battle vs the US, in my case they threw in a half dozen bombers (back when med bombers were individual planes) and plastered me heavily. After that 1/2 of my support points went to AA each battle vs the US, the UK never seemed to buy planes like the US (up to 24 planes by the US in one battle).
thanks, John.
