[1.7.0.7] [Ship behavior] Overprotective automated ships

Post by Raap »

I think the automated ships patrolling around need some work. At least a couple of times in my ongoing game I've found a large part of my navy all patrolling a single mining base. Most recently I found 70 out of my 150 total capital ships patrolling a mining base all the way up in the otherwise empty corner of the map, 70K firepower for a base even my freighters barely bother to visit. So yeah, definitely something odd there, it's not as if there aren't other things they could be patrolling, preferably and primarily my border systems.

Happens a lot (and always with a specific mining base). Not sure what's causing this other than having too many military ships?

Been playing some further in my game and if anything it's gotten a lot worse. At least half my ships are now patrolling one base before all of them suddenly start moving towards and patrolling another. Then they go back to the previous base again. Just the two bases though. So yeah, odd to say the least. But you might be right on the ships thing, maybe I just have too many of the same class all on automated.

On another note about ship behavior, it seems ships with automated repair systems don't cancel their 'Repair at...' order even if the ship's fully repaired long before it's at the repair base.

Ships are also patrolling independant worlds for no reason. If you are colonising it fair enough but they do it regardless. This is very annoying when they are placed a fair distance away.

Seen this with computer controlled alien races as well (Quameno, after they had a substantial military buildup). So by no means isolated to the player.

I've had this behavior as well with many of my automated ships patrolling one of my early Caslon mining bases. I had rationalized it as they were protecting the largest caslon source close to my home world at first, but as the game continued and that base lost some of its importance and it remained the center of my patrolling activities I started finding it odd.
