OKH Situation Report
24 August 1940

After an extensive, all out effort by the Luftwaffe the defenders of Dover were still able to put up an active defense and while our paratroopers have taken the city they have not yet secured the port. This means we have not been able to get any reinforcements to them. The British response forces will surely try and get back control of Dover. There is only a thin grey line dug in just outside Dover to hold them off. The paratroopers face two ways, trying to get the port facilities, while preparing to hold off the British attack. The success of the enterprise depends on the next few days.

In the East we are coming up against the first significant position. Reducing this defense will take time.

OKH Situation Report

Things look better in North Africa, but we are strained to find resources to deploy there. The British seem to have gone all out here.

OKH Situation Report
1 September 1940

The British brought a small infantry force into Dover. They had a full Corps of Infantry which could have arrived there but, inexplicably, chose not to use it. They must think we have no amphibious capability.

OKH Situation Report
1 September 1940 - continued

In the East we continue to move as quickly as we can, hoping always to keep the Soviets off guard. At some point we will surely run into larger numbers of red Army troops. This is a very large country with huge resources, but by going at maximum speed we place the point where we confront fronts further in the USSR. We would like to be as deep into theenemies country as possible when we must slow.

OKH Situation Report
9 September 1940

Our amphibious operation was a success, and we are ashore is significant force. We have met this enemy in France and know our foe. It may take us awhile to defeat the British, but they will not push us from our foothold on their island. The arrogance of the British to allow us to get ashore is astounding. The Wehrmacht has been successful in battle on all fronts. These troops are not good guests in the parlor.

OKH Situation Report

Neither of our enemies will be easy to force to the treaty tables. Euphoria reigns in Berlin, but we have a lot of fighting to do yet.

OKH War wrap up
24 September 1941

The war is over. The USA came very close to stepping in at the last moment, but with the collapse of the Soviet Union she wisely decided to turn her attention to the Pacific. The British Empire is no more as there is no longer a European component to said Empire. The nations of the former Empire are also looking to trouble in the Pacific.

Player comments : I played this game out as the Axis till September 1941, with the results seen in the map above. Rather than post a few hundred more posts I will simply say that the OKH was right back in September 1940 about the course the war would take. The Soviets did get stronger, and the Axis attack was bogging down, but about April 1941 the event programmed Red Army collapse occured. This script probably needs to be fixed for cases where the Red Army attacks a year early.

I also decided to switch sides to the Allies when Sea Lion occured. As I indicated the simple placement of an available corps in Dover foiled the invasion, and the British went on to defeat the Axis in North Africa. The Soviets held the Germans well, and defeated the Finns handily. In April 1941 after the defeat of Finland, and the conversion of nearly the whole of Red Army infantry and mechanized forces to level 2, the inexplicable Red Army Collapse event occured. The same troops who had held the Wehrmacht, and just destroyed a major cauldron of German troops at Minsk, were weakened by an event which should have happened a year before. As I said this script should be modified to start its check for war with the Axis much earlier.

One of the interesting decisions I had to make in the playing was what to do when Great Britain asked for an armistice. I tried it all three ways, puppetizing, peace, and continued war. I opted to choose continued war. Interestingly, when I chose puppetizing the USA declared war on the Soviet Union!

The railroads add so much to the game. The player who appreciates their ramifications will prosper.

If anyone is interested in aspects of the game between 9/40 and 9/41, or any other questions I will be glad to answer them.

Thanks for this game to doomtrader, and the playtest community, a group I have enjoyed being part of for four Wastelands games now. The new patches and refinements will keep the engine fresh.

Finally my thanks to Razz for "Third Reich", and to all the modders who have fallen in love with doom's flexible flyer!

You never loaded the patch to version 1 or used version 2 as it was out before you started your game.
Both of those versions play completely different as you have to fight for Norway.
Also, your support of Romania can lead to an early war with Russia. In your case it happened.
The game plays completely different without an early war.

There's a fine line with the early war.
Players were abusing it and declaring early war as Russia and walking into Berlin too easily, especially in multi player game.
Now, the early war penalty hurts the Russian player if it is drawn into a war via Romania.
I'll have to look at that penalty and link it the Romanian event so the penalty will not trigger.
I had the same problem with the early war in my test.
I will also let the German player know war has started via this event, as of now you have to look for it in a report or discover it on the map when you have been invaded by Stalin.

Thanks for your comments.

I started using your Third Reich by downloading it and starting play, but I remember the Norway version came just after I started. As I answered Gary I never had a chance to support Romania, as there was never a question to the German player. Whatever Romania did it was the AI that chose.

In event 370 and 371 the date range test is :

<beginDate day="1" month="4" year="1941"/>
<endDate day="31" month="12" year="1948"/>

I think if this is changed to :

<beginDate day="1" month="9" year="1939"/>

then the Red Army shock will come upon contact with the Wehrmacht, an initial shock at their superiority, and not a year after battling them day in, and day out. If there is an early war, German initiated or Soviet initiated, then the shock will come early in the campaign.

In both the Axis and Allied variant I played the "Temporary Collapse of the Red Army" came at a time that made no sense.

I was also surprised that the USA went to a pro-Axis stance when Great Britain was defeated.

It led to the unlikely event depicted in the snapshot below. This makes the game pretty boring, and ahistorical to boot.

The above event will have to be checked as that is standard TOF. I'm not sure if Doom has fixed it yet for 1.02 patch.
I'll tell him to look at it and view this thread.

I've gone over that Romanian event several times and the associated links.

I swear Romania will only drag Germany into a war if Germany decides to support Romania.

Upon further discussion...
This game was played on vanilla version 1.0
Hence the supply restrictions and waiting one turn before an amphibious landing among other features were not in the game.
Hence the quick result of victory.
Patch 1.01 severely limits Germany's abilities in England, Russia and Africa.

No, this version was on 1.01. The only patch I was missing was the one that doomtrader introduced to prevent the early DoW by the Soviet Union on Germany.

The quick results of victory reflect aggressive play under the constraints of the efficiency penalties. I saw the penalties for a tired, army in need of repair after Poland but pushed on anyway. It is harder now, but the Wehrmacht advances when ordered to do so!

It is what it is. The human player should always choose the side which has the initiative most often. A human can carve his way through obstacles. If the human chooses the side which is most passive then they give up one of the huge advantages a human has over an AI. It is much easier to program an AI to stand in line and defend. More difficult to show dash and recognize opportunity.
