Planet names, bug?

Post by AstroCat »

I asked this in General but maybe it's a bug?

I know the star/system names come from the systems.txt file. And I see usually it names the planets the same name as the star/system numbered, like Alpha 1 Alpha 2, etc... but sometimes there are strange unique planet names thrown in like Iliebcyn or Owyyveaze. Where do those names come from (is there a file?) and why do some get unique names? Is this a bug of some kind?

Thanks.

I don't think it's a bug
As for how its named, I'm guessing either it's hardcoded or it uses the systems.txt as well

Is there any reason it just throws in these "random" planet names or is it just for "flavor"? I don't think it comes from systems.txt because the planet names are not in there.

Are these the names of moons and not planets? Sometime back there was a discussion of the naming process with regards to star systems and their orbiting objects. The method of naming planets after their main star with increasing numbers(ex. Sol1, Sol2, Sol3, etc.) was good. But moon names, I believe, needs changing. The current method gives you no idea where this moon is located, by using the name alone. I would like to see a standard naming method that uses letters, like the moons of Sol1 would be Sol1a, Sol1b, Sol1c, etc. Much easier to know where these moons are.

Just ran across one of those odd planet names. I have no clue why that is happening.

No these are for sure planets. For example say the system is Alpha and it has 9 Planets. 8 Planets will be named Alpha 1 - Alpha 8 and the 9th one will be called something odd like Owyyveaze. It's placement in the system could be anywhere, it's not always the most outer one or anything like that. It seems like just 1 planet of the system is getting the random name but it could be more, I'm pretty new to the game.

The Moons also get random names but I know that is working as intended, at least for now.

I have indeed seen planets named with actual names, not designations

One of those questions that only Elliot can provide an answer to I think

Hmmm, ok for now I'll take as "working as intended". Thanks.

I have no idea how it works, but it is on purpose.

Usually named planets have somethign special (like super weapon, or the super-rare resources, for example in each game there is AWLAYS a moon named Lomos that has Lomos Fruit, and a desert planet named Korrabia that has Spice and sand slugs, and so on...)

I wish all the planets had consistent names like Alpha 1, Alpha 2, etc. That would make it a lot easier to cover a system with mining stations in late game. Just find the name of system on the map in your core territory, then sort by name in the expansion planner and colonize them all. Much easier than sorting by distance and having to scroll everywhere and filter false positives.
