Playing with Dual Monitors

Command Ops: Battles From The Bulge takes the highly acclaimed Airborne Assault engine back to the West Front for the crucial engagements during the Ardennes Offensive. Test your command skills in the fiery crucible of Airborne Assault’s “pausable continuous time” uber-realistic game engine. It's up to you to develop the strategy, issue the orders, set the pace, and try to win the laurels of victory in the cold, shadowy Ardennes.
Command Ops: Highway to the Reich brings us to the setting of one of the most epic and controversial battles of World War II: Operation Market-Garden, covering every major engagement along Hell’s Highway, from the surprise capture of Joe’s Bridge by the Irish Guards a week before the offensive to the final battles on “The Island” south of Arnhem.

Playing with Dual Monitors

Post by Tzar007 »

I have dual monitors, so I though I would be able to have Command Ops loaded in one monitor, while keeping the other one to browse through the Game Manual, or write down some notes.

Unfortunately, everytime I alt-tab out of Commands Ops, it minimizes down into the task bar instead of staying on screen while I do my stuff on the other monitor. While doesn't it stay there?

Do you know guys how to keep Command Ops on screen in the first monitor?

Howdy Tzar007,

What I think might work for you is the following:

Set up your montiors to be one very large desktop. Then set up the resolution of BFTB to be the size of one of the screens (i.e. 1/2 of the desktop), then move it to the monitor you want (or leave on the main one I think will work better) and then open and position the manual, etc. on the other area of the desktop.

Well, that's a bummer. Windows 7 does not support anymore the "span" or "stretch" desktop function. It supports the "Extend desktop" function, but that is the standard dual monitor setup and it does not equal to stretching the desktop. Incredibly enough, Microsoft used to support that in the old trusted XP, but apparently stopped with Vista and Windows 7, and has resumed supporting it in Windows 8.

I played with my graphics cards settings as much as possible to see if this could be supported but even nVidia support seem to acknowledges that this is not possible in Windows 7.

Oh well.

I use extended desktop. I run the game on the main monitor and all my other stuff on the secondary. But I can simply drag an app window to the main window at any time. The game must be run on the main display. It is not windowed as such.

Here's the game running on my main display (on the left) with acrobat and other stuff on the right.

Here is another example where I have dragged the acrobat window partially over the main display. Note you can drag other windows over the Game but you can't drag the Game.

I duplicated your settings Dave but for whatever reason it didn't change anything. When I am in Command Ops, the mouse cursor cannot cross over the other monitor. It stops at the edges of the monitor, and when I alt-tab, the application minimizes into the task bar.

Anyway, after fiddling some more, I ended up downloading a third-party app to manage multiple monitors. This changed the behavior as my mouse can now cross over the second monitor back and forth and I can go into another application while Command Ops stays on the first monitor.

So I'm happy now [:D]

Well I am glad to hear that. However, I have no problems moving the mouse over to the other monitor without the need to Alt-tab. And when I Alt-tab it does not minimise the app. I am just using the default configurations for my mouse and displays.

I have done this successfully on 2 monitors with XP and now W7. I didn't do anything special. I have one adapter that has three video outputs. Am using two. both screens were recognized on boot up. When starting the game it starts and remains on the main screen. I can anything ahead of time and move it to the 2nd screen. Then i switch back and forth with ease.
