Speed/Altitude Sliders

Post by miller7219 »

I'm not nit-picking, but I'm having some issues with the speed/altitude sliders. They are clunky as all heck! The speed slider is livable, because your only dealing with a small spread of max to min, but the altitude slider has a huge spread and trying to get the slider to the altitude you want using the mouse and up/down arrow keys is a pain in the butt!

Would it be possible to replace the sliders with, or just add next to the sliders, a text box so the user can type in a specific speed or altitude?

I will select the slider with the mouse (just hover over it?) and use the up/down arrows to do minor adjustments.

Yep, I do the same thing. Click on the slider and Then use the up/down key to move in 5 meter increments, so if you're at 100 meters and want to go to 10,000 meters there're a lot of clicks involved in that simple task! Or you just might get lucky and drag/release the slider bar and luckily land on 10,000 meters on the first try! Vegas anyone :)

Something else I noticed is the platform begins to climb/dive or change speed as soon as you adjust the slider, not after you exit the window. While I'm on my quest to get the correct altitude set on the slider I'd rather the platform not respond until I exit the window, thus confirming the order. What if I change my mind and decide to leave it where it was originally...another slider hunt just to get back to where it was!

The slider should also tell you the maximum speed at which you can go without cavitating, and have a checkbox that lets you tell your unit not to cavitate -- if it's something that that unit could know, anyway!

I've not worried about being too precise with the Speed & Alt slides but more concerned with the Altitude one being a barometric altitude setting rather than an AGL setting. So when I manually set an aircraft's altitude within it's weapon's launch parameters, I need to do some math unless I plan on them cruising along at their minimum allowed altitude, in some cases.

The on-map unit/group icon will display "CAV" under it if cavitates I think, but then it's too late! I like your idea of the cavitation speed being displayed in the speed/altitude window...then you can just type in a speed up to the cavitation speed to avoid cavitating :)

I didn't notice that, but good point! All in all I think the speed/altitude window is far from perfect will likely see great improvement in the future.

Added the request to show the cavitate value in the speed and alt dialog.

We've been talking the speed and alt dialog but think we did alright with the sliders.

Thanks!

I would like a type in option. If only so I can avoid speed ending up at a squadron nr that I dont like [:D]

I would like to see some button presets for altitudes similar to the speed buttons. eg, Very Low, Low, Medium, High.

I mentioned it in other post, but it would be nice to have something in the speed dialog so that you know the max speed for the GROUP. Unless I am missing something, you have to individually go figure out what are the top speeds of the individual units (which is not that easy as you can't use the database), and then set accordingly. Would be great for the slider to at least "advise" what is the max speed of the group.

Have to confirm with D but pretty sure when you select the group and press F2 calling the speed and alt dialog the max speed displayed is for the group.

Hmmmm.. interesting. I have definitely seen times that is not true, however, I don't know if I've always seen it wrong. I will have to play with that more.

OK...Battle of Chumonchin Chan - Jamaica Class 31 kts. - Black Swan Class 21kts. Group them together - slider shows 31 still for Group_145. And worse,
it I set flank (31) even with "allow leader to slow to reform", The Jamaica class leaves the poor Black swan in the dust.....

Maybe I'm doing something wrong, but this is not the first time I've seen this (Couple of other scenarios also).

+1 to find out if you see the same things.....

There's another problem with speed settings that I noticed in my Backfire test scenario. When airplanes are engaged on a mission, the manual speed override doesn't kick in any more. The "manual" checkbox immediately gets deactivated when klicking on it, and changing the speed slider immediately resets to the auto speed. The problem is that the attack speed for some units seems very slow, or at least massively below the capabilities of a platform.

In my scenario, the Backfires were engaged offensive and flew at 520 knots or so, when the prudent thing would be to dash in at Mach 2. That would be a problem when you have F-14s hunting them during ingress.

My only gripe with the Speed/Alt dialog is that when you select a Preset Throttle Value (Loiter, Cruise, etc) they weren't adjusting speed for increasing/decreasing altitude. If the last Speed input was a Preset, the game should maintain that preset throughout all altitude changes.

Added this in Build 758.
