Games advice

Command Ops: Battles From The Bulge takes the highly acclaimed Airborne Assault engine back to the West Front for the crucial engagements during the Ardennes Offensive. Test your command skills in the fiery crucible of Airborne Assault’s “pausable continuous time” uber-realistic game engine. It's up to you to develop the strategy, issue the orders, set the pace, and try to win the laurels of victory in the cold, shadowy Ardennes.
Command Ops: Highway to the Reich brings us to the setting of one of the most epic and controversial battles of World War II: Operation Market-Garden, covering every major engagement along Hell’s Highway, from the surprise capture of Joe’s Bridge by the Irish Guards a week before the offensive to the final battles on “The Island” south of Arnhem.

I have it on my magical compact flash hard drive that resides in my Amiga 1200. Nice game actually.

There is apparently a dos version. Who knows? Probably a copy laying about somewhere. Dosbox then springs to mind. Couldn't be simpler really.

As for other Eastern Front games, well, a lot of them are clickers, including Case Blue and Disaster, both of which I enjoy.

You could swap scale and get Close Combat: CoI, one of my favourites.

Or you have Panzer Command: Ostfront, another fun tactical level game.

Combat Mission: Barbarossa to Berlin is still brilliant (doesn't have horrid drm either..).

Conflict of Heroes is good, but check it out to make sure you like the taste.

John Tillers Campaign (containing East Front II) series is one of my old favourites, but it can be slow.

Steel Panthers World at War. Great game with East Front campaigns.

Well, unless you want me to delve back into Amiga and Commodore 64 days, I am out of ideas for the East front now, at least of games I have actually played on a PC. If you lived down the street we could play tabletop though.

The Operational Art of War has quite a selection of East Front Scenarios and with the "Program Assist" feature on you don't have to move all the bits on your side.

Thanks for all the advice, guys. Now I'm not so sure....

Fire Brigade? You mean Panther Games 'Fire Brigade'? That's not even available anymore, is it? Or do you mean another?
There's one copy on ebay. Damn. It seems that I bought one shortly before it became a rarity. It's sad to see these old games slowly disappearing from auction sites/retrogaming stores[:(].

One day Battlefront will release Combat Mission: Eastern Front, but that's not today. Or tomorrow. Or maybe even next year because god knows they've missed a whole bunch of deadlines on their Italian front detour.

Can't abide the Combat Front system. That's a clicker if ever there was one. At that level, though, GTOS is decent and interesting.

I'm sure Dave must have Fire Brigade lying around. It's his game.

He should just sit on those copies for a little while more, I think. If as Perturabo says, they're all but gone from EBay, their value might approach, gram per gram, that of gold [:)]

I just rechecked my Kharkov Disaster on the Donets and didn't have any issue with graphics, if you decide to give that a look. I'm on Win 7 with 1366x768 resolution. Played on both desktop and laptop.

It doesn't offer the delegation of control you get with CO, so you do have to manage your units. But I still find it (as well as BiN and BiI) to be pretty enjoyable.

From what I've seen, this kind of games tend to stay below the release price, even when very rare.
Games that tend to increase value are cult games like Autoduel, Wasteland and Fallout.

And then gog.com releases them digitally and their value plummets to $5.99

I want to hear more about that. Did you set any compatibility settings for the executable?

I don't think so. I installed quite a while back, and didn't recall having a problem. I just tried it again yesterday to make sure (I've actually been playing BiI for a few weeks, but fired up Kharkov yesterday to double check.

I'll check my shortcut and see if there is anything special set up for compatibility.
Nope, just check properties on the shortcut and nothing is checked in compatibility tab.

I'm using NVidia video drivers on desktop.

If there is something else you want me to check let me know. Also, I did just notice that I'm actually firing up the Across the Dneiper II shortcut (which was an add-on the the Kharkov - Disaster on the Donets game ), but I don't think that's a factor.

Thank you for letting me know that - it might indeed be something that was related to graphics card drivers (I also have an Nvidia card). Will give it another try, because I really like those games.
