Missouri Rebel, the answer to your question was economic downturn is partially responsible, but in the US increasing use of natural gas for power generation is also a growing factor. Several factors are at play, including the economic one. Nevertheless, even if the US and EC lines weren't heading down but sloping slowly upward, the Chinese line would still be where it is. And the general trend noted in the graph would still be the same. 3rd world is about to swamp the US and EC in that regard, and there is nothing anyone is going to be able to do about it.
