Question about Battle Academy Eastfront.

If this is representing the east front, why are the russians using green equipment and tanks and stuff? Traditionally the colors have been beige or pink (old AH stalingrad game colors). Just wondering as I looked at the screenshots and was amazed to see green for russian stuff. Or were those screenshots of the western front game?

Historically the Russians (Soviets) painted their vehicles green, it was not a dark olive green like the US, but it was a lighter green.

It may be kind of hard to see in this image, but both the T-34/85 and Sherman are painted green.

However with all that said I get what your 'referring' to. But I also don't play Battlefront Academy.

Yeah I knew that but for wargames traditionally they have been beige or pink. Just wondering no big deal as I don't like the east front anyways so I won't be purchasing it.

I have been playing board war games for 35+ years, and AH stopped using Pink in 1969ish.

SPI started to use Brown, and the light Green (War in the East 1st edition) and then white on Dark Green in 1976 for War in Europe / War in the East 2nd edition.

Traditionally the Soviets for board war games are Red, Brown, Tan, Green, or some shade of those colors, not traditionally beige or pink.

I have about 700 board war game still (I still play quite a few of them, in fact I play more board war games then PC war games), and a large portion of those are on the Eastern Front. Only Stalingrad, D-Day, Blitzkreig, Battle of the Bulge and Afrika Korps from Avalon Hill had 'pink' counters.

Stalingrad, Battle of the Bulge, Africa Corp by AH and Tactics II were the only board wargames I ever bought of that era. The units were pink (note this was around 1968 I didn't by anymore boardgames until Swords & Scorcery and Squad Leader came out around 1978. I got into board baseball and football simulations more in that 10 years than wargames.).

Now as I recall other PC games just so you don't get confused also use Beige for Russian troops and equipment. I never got into SPI (except for Swords & Sorcery; great game btw) too expensive compared to what I paid for AH board games back then ($3.64) and PC games.

Remember T.A.C. by AH? Pretty good PC game for its time. I go all the way back to the time of acsi (I think that's what it was) Midway and Bismark, Andromedia Conquest, Planet Miners....some really great games in their day with some decent ai. The graphics of course sucked.

I just commented because all the traditional colors for russians I've ever seen were beige and pink. I had never seen green russian anything before. Of course Green traditionally was always the USA. Of course I didn't play every game in the world like SOME people I know. [:'(]

I also recently played a Battle of Academy game and now that I think about it the Allies colors were lite beige to off green beige (my eyes are going lol). I just know if I did get into east front games, board or PC I could never get into green russian units. It's like drinking cola, once you've tasted the good stuff it's hard to drink diet.

Hell, I've got that many PC games Slaak. In fact more than that. I have so many I can hardly walk in my computer room for all of them stacked up somewhere or their boxes and manuals. Manuals. Love Manuals, gotta get more manuals.

Dang and pink was my favorite color for the russians. Worked great for the panty waist faction. heheh I never like russians. Thas why I don't like east front games or any games that has more russian troops than others. I should have bought Guadacanal by AH for that $3.64 as do you know what it's worth now? I know Stalingrad isn't worth a plug nickel as I got it and Waterloo and Gettysburg and Battle of the Bulge and Alexander for like 9.00 on ebay for all of them. I just wanted them for nostalgia purposes as those were the ones I had of my youth. My first set I had to leave with someone in a move and never saw them again. I also had 3 of the origional American Heritage games, Battle Cry, Broadsides and Dogfight. Boy how I miss those.

Also AH didn't stop using pink in 1968 because I got a game around 1979 "Magic Realm" that had pink ogres and dragons and orcs and goblins and bats and giant snakes. [:D]

Plus the only good board wargames to come out after the 60's were Squad Leader an Advanced Squad Leader nothing else came close. Then in 1981 the commodore VIC came out and I never looked back at board wargames again. All that messing with setup and the cat or dog running though the board and messing up your counters or worse eating them were gone.

My first game Knights of the Desert by SSI on tape. Ahhhh I'll never forget the good ole days and games made on tape. lol There were so many good ones made back then too, Tigers in the Snow (battle of the bulge) Kampfgruppe (probably the only eastern front game I owned) Battlegroup (like Kampfgruppe but in the desert) Battle for Normandy, Geopolitic, Carrier Force, Fighter Command (eagle day type airplane game with chits no less and maps)

And really the first real time combat game called get this... Combat Leader by some guy named Hille.( Tanks were square boxes and infantry looked like tinie tinie chess pawns.) That's why I was surprised Matrixgames was using that name on the new Combat Leader game that got axed years ago. Wish whey would make a new Combat Leader/Steel Panthers game though the graphics are so out dated it's hard to tell what is what anymore.

Well I agree everyone has different tastes. But there have been may great and excellent board war games that have been produced after '68. I can think of SPI: War in Europe, Panzergruppe Guderian, Breakout & Pursuit, GDW Europa series, AH Turning Point Stalingrad (Russians are Red in that one), Third Reich, Advanced Third Reich, Panzerblitz, Panzerleader, Advanced Squad Leader (I play this almost exclusively, it still has a vibrate online community there were also 168 at ASLOK last Oct.), Up Front and from GMT there have been scads of great games, and from MMP (/The Gamers) a ton of fun and very playable games.

The main problem with computer war games is the lack of scope that you get from looking at a flat screen, you have to always scroll and zoom in/out to get a feel of 'things'. With board war games you don't that problem, also board war games tend to me more social, and I don't allow any cats in my domain (they are evil nasty creatures) I do have 2 dogs and they are obedient and know their place in my game room.

Hahah try convincing my wife of that. Cats to her are the cats meow so to speak. I've tried to get her to get rid of them it's like selling one of the kids to her. lol In fact I think she would give up the kids vs these cats sometimes. (she....notice I said she has two). If she goes before me and these cats are still around well you can bet they won't be for long.[:D]
