This is a really good game!

Germany At War: Operation Barbarossa 1941 is an elegant turn-based design, inspired by classics such as Panzer General, but with more of a historical focus. You command the German forces through a branching historical campaign covering the entire 1941 campaign as well as part of the 1942 campaign. Dozens of scenarios stretch from the Soviet border all the way to Archangel and towards Astrakhan, the original military goals of Operation Barbarossa. Step into a wargame where your performance will rewrite history, through an addictive combination of compelling gameplay, realistic events and challenging battles.

Its a pity that the first impressions just taken from screenshots are not likely to encourage Panzer/Allied Corps owners to play this game because the gameplay is intuitive and easy to pick up and there is just enough strategic thought involved to make it more than a beer and Pretzels or Rock Paper Scissors game (which I consider PC).

Anybody who likes Unity of Command in particular would not find this an arduous game to master, for me it is pitched at exactly the right level because I no longer care for the tedious micro management of War in the East or the large scenarios in TOAW and being able to play a scenario in an hour or less is exactly what I am looking for. Sadly, without a demo, people are going to have take that on trust - I used the demo from the original Operation Barbarossa game to give me some idea and just assumed that more chrome would have been added, which is absolutely correct.

Everyone has their own ideas as to what makes a 'good' wargame, but to me this has the right balance between simplicity/abstraction and historical atmosphere to make it a joy to play and I wish that more people could see it that way so that Ronald will be encouraged to develop the game further in future, anyway two thumbs up from me!

One more thing, unless you check the feature list VERY carefully, it isn't obvious that you can play the Soviet side in the scenarios - I haven't seen a single post with anyone talking about what it's like to play as the Soviets so it may give a misleading impression that the whole game you can only play from the German side...

Just downloaded the demo. I am not a fan of PC so this had put me off, perhaps wrongly. Also, I assumed you could only play the German side.

The game screen shots give the impression it is a poor game. Today I downloaded the demo. I installed it but cannot get it to run.

I have the game and the one thing I don't like to much is the quality of the graphics. I wish it was more detailed and crisp. I didn't like the process of the planes and ground troops being so difficult to see. Just my thoughts on the game.

I like the emphasis on being more historical. However, many Open General campaigns achieve this. Anyone with experience of both wish to compare and contrast?

p.s. I like PC, I like OG, just not sure I need GAW given OG :-)

I would say that PBEM play is much "brisker" in GAW than OG. I would also say the MP scenarios are much more balanced in GAW. OG there's more grinding with counters. In the smaller GAW games, one false move and you could be done for.

GaW has a different rule set. Some things are simular or equal as all three games are based on the Panzer General Series. The combat system and the logistics in GaW are different though. Have you downloaded the demo ? With it you could experience the difference quite well.
Try to play with detailed supply and you will find yourself pondering about your resources as wrong decisions might stop important units before they can strike. Bridges are very important and can be repaired or destructed, and tank units need them to cross rivers,so this causes different thinking again.
Its not only the historic feel, but the way it is achieved.
This are just two examples, give the demo a try and you will see if this game attracts you.

just purchased this and have played through the first 8 scenarios in the long campaign. Loving it so far. While there are some similarities with panzer corps, GaW has more of a real wargame feel. Using the Nato icons accentuates this. The campaign does a great job of giving the player the feeling that they are managing the actual campaign. I especially like the way that I get to manage each of the Army Groups separately, but then have to decide where to put the emphasis (and allocate troops accordingly). Very clever. Also, the battles feel more historical than Panzer Corps, which while fun, have more of a puzzle-solving feel to them.

I like this game. In the last week I've put LnLHoS and Battle Academy 2 onto my machine. To me this game has big maps, and good chances for some real strategy.

Hello jjackson,

the campaigns are designed for the Axis and can only be played with the Germans and their coalition.

really enjoying the game so far, really good feel to it, well balanced and very easy to pick up, straight forward to learn and a very easy learning curve, couldn't recommend it more, the demo did it for me, played it last night and was hooked.

repaired a few bridges, fought a few battles, upgraded my troops and played with them in the next mission, and before i knew it the missus was asking why i wasn't in bed :) lol another game that you loose time with if you want to that is, could have saved where i was but played on, not had a game for a while that kept me so hooked.

congrats and very well done, great price as well, well worth it, hope to see more missions / campaigns in the near future and build on what is a very enjoyable game.

5 out of 5, can't praise it more :)

nothing so far i'd alter or change, have muted music so can't comment on that, speed of turn is great, good AI so far, good easy setup, looks and plays very well, right up my street and agree with many comments above, about in the middle of not too hard a game, without it being like panzer corps etc, for me which was a little too easy or Gary Grigsbys War in the East being a bit too in depth for my style of playing and too hard to jump straight in and have a quick play, so about in the middle of wargames for more around about right same as Unity of Command and Flashpoint Campaigns Red Storm levels etc

can't think of anything else tbh atm, so will end it there and get back to playing (a great game to add to the collection)thanks all involved.

Thanks for your comments. Swaying me :). BTW i agree the Panzer Corps original grabd campaign was easy but did you ever try the later expansions like Desert or the yearly ones of Germany defending the West? I found them quite challenging (at higher levels). Just fyi

after playing panzer corp all the way through and the dlc's etc, more than a few times tbh, it just got to be a tank rush fest for me, some of the campaigns were a challenge but soon as i knew where stuff was it became less and a bit samey, was a good game mind you and i played it to death and still go back and try some new missions when they come out, love the mods some of the guys are doing, won't take it off pc same as War in the East etc, just need to give some games a bit more time than sometimes i wish to spend, sometimes you just want to jump right in and have a quick half hour, yes might end up like last night being a 5 hour long quick half hour but hay hoy, i had fun :)

just played 3 hours and had a great time, won some lost some but had fun playing so for me thats what it's about, if i win too easy it's no challenge, if i get hammered alot and don't know what i'm doing i go read the manual or play the tutorial etc and read a bit more etc until i think i know what i'm doing, most of the time it's feet in first for me, get killed or loose a lot but thats how i like to play, it's not until i get serious then i get grumpy if i loose more than a few units and start again.

why more games don't release demo's first i don't no, i hardly ever buy unless a demo comes out, no matter who has made it or what other games they have made either, cos everyone makes a turkey from time to time (rome2 total war etc proved that for me)

this is one of those games which if supported well by mods / dlc and mission packs etc could be a good game for a very long time :)
