Having a hard time...

Post by 76mm »

Am enjoying this game quite a bit, it is really addictive.

But I'm having a hard time keeping my guys alive, much less winning races.

Despite lots of practice, I'm still regularly wiping out on turns. Usually I find that a "red" turn is to be avoided, a brown turn is managable if I use the "control" command, and the various shades of green. But sometimes i wipe out even on brown turns, and I'm still struggling to understand what is the best way to avoid a "red" turn--I find that braking really kills your speed for too long, so I've started to drift out to the outside of the track if I have too much speed on the turns. Does anyone have any helpful rules of thumb?

Not to mention that every time I've tried a lacerating attack my guy loses his whip, so I don't try those much anymore.

There is an answer for both questions: skill. If your auriga is more skilled he will be able to negotiate turn safer, and its laceration attacks will be more effective. You usually lose your whip because you are trying to lacerate higher skilled aurigas-take a look to the tunic's brightness to avoid that.

Also, if you constantly take turns with the orange (brown) danger levels then it is likely than sooner or later something bad happens. Try to stay safe until the opportunity to do a masterstroke arises [;)]

Thanks, but many of the visual cues (tunic color, etc.) are too suble for me, I really can't tell the difference. We really need the tooltips that others have asked for.

Make sure to brake when needed esp if going into a tight turn. Either slow down if your going into a tight turn or if going in wider use control. Once I started to use brake more often I won a race in the demo. After playing the demo I think I will ask for this for a birthday present in August, sure I can wait until then;)

I had same problem until I decided to go really cautious with main aim keeping auriga alive. after a few races his skill improved and this helped a lot. Generally speaking I win by whipping/accelerating on the straights and controlling on the bends. So far I haven't used braking at all.

The game is very good. I hope it can be developed a bit more in future? would be great to get more history and more stats/variables in -- but that's just a personal take.

Doing slightly better with my most recent Syrian team. I've found that there are very different tactics necessary for the different teams in the different arenas--very cool.

I also think that more stats/history and a replay would make this game even better. Not to mention multi-player...

Cough up the $20 and support the developer man!!

Anyways to the OP, without at least 1 skill for your auriga, you will need to be very cautious navigating the turns, ie navigating wider or braking. There's no way around it without risking overturning your chariot; I tend to prefer swinging wide and not braking, unless I am in the inside lane. You can also 'ride' up against an adjacent opponent and cheat your way through a turn. Something really cool is coming into a turn hard then diving into the inside lane with the max lane change and then fly out of the turn. I learned that from the AI, and under certain conditions can work flawlessly, grabbing you the lead. This game is really quite amazing.

I've noticed "leaning" on an opponent in turns, but wasn't sure what effect it was having, if any. Will have to try the dive inside trick.

I wonder how they've modeled the physics of chariot racing??
