Anecdote

Post by Szilard »

Just finished Telford Taylor's memoir of the first Nuremberg trial.
I wasn't expecting to read this anecdote about "Gravel Voice" Harmon
(commander 2nd Armored etc etc).

In 1945 he was appointed commander of the special military "Zone Constabulary".
He came to Nuremberg for some meetings, and while there attended a reception given by
chief trial judge Lord Lawrence and Lady Lawrence.

"Lady Lawrence was standing sideways to the entrance, receiving the guests.

Finding her posterior prepossessing, Harmon saluted it with a huge pinch.

Lady Lawrence turned .. speechless with embarrassment, and Harmon, grinning and
extending a hand in friendly greeting.

... Later that evening General Harmon was seen in the Marble Room dancing with
great vigor and occasionally lifting his partners over his head."

It's a *long* book and heavy going in places, but sprinkled with anecdotes like this one,
and little glimpses of what was obviously for Telford a half-fondly
remembered period of his (relative) youth. Or in other words, one of those
times & places where you are young and so are lots of other people and
everybody's shtupping each other. From the little hints he drops, Telford
was getting his share!

An intriguing image: bright young justice-warriors working hard, partying hard and
promiscuously copulating, while the crazed evil major war criminals
fester in their lonely cells ..
