Post by gidogrobber »

I've just downloaded and installed SPWaW 7.1...Great Game...
But its using 100% of my cpu usage?? what gives?? I'm running Win XP Pro.. Amd 2.1XP....DirectX 9. very stable under heavy 3D game Loads..but just starting SPWaW sends my CPU to the moon
, with periodic drop outs, and dropping into SVGA mode?????

I'm still new at diagnosing problems, but this one has me stumped..

Any guidence will be appreciated:D :D :D :

I'm definitely not an expert in comps but SPWAW is a memory hog.

If your running another ap at the same time.... don't

I hope these two things help. By the way WELCOME ABOARD.

Gidogrobber, try starting the game directly from 'mech.exe' file. That has cured many similar issues.

Because of it's old DOS based code is does cosume alot of processor power. It's not actually using all 100%, this is only displayed as such when you open the task manager or other programs to view it. Disable any antivirus program in the background will also cure random drop out.

Kernel leaks? Now comp just shuts down and restarts?????

Post by gidogrobber »

Thanks for the input guys, I've gone and started the game directly from mech.exe, rid myself of norton, but no fix, the comp now likes to totally drop out and resart, or drop into vga mode.

What gives...??????

This system is normally very stable as a server for up to 24 players in mech 4. Without a hitch.......

It's a great game, what I've played of it....but this problem is getting on my nerves, I can't take the instability problems much longer:mad:  .....Please help:confused:

Thanks Again for your previous help....

Talk to ya soon :)

What resolution are you running the game in. Try running the game in this resolution 800x600 16bit it was designed to be run at this setting. Try deleting this file c:\MatrixGames\Steel Panthers World at War\save\steelp.prf and holder.txt if you have one. What video card are you using. Ensure all drivers are the latest, especially video and sound. One last thing do you have any Direct-CD or burning programs in the systray. If you do turn them off, they can also cause conflicts with SPWAW.

DirectX 9?

Post by gidogrobber »

Is there a possibility that SPWaw is not DirectX9 friendly??

Even when I reduce to 800x600 res, I removed the two files in the save folder, I'm getting errors that shut down the system.

I'm running an older asus v8200 Gefoce 3 200ti graphics card, with recent drivers, and a soundblaster live 5.1 in stereo 2 speaker mode.

Still trying.....:D But still dying:mad:

Not to the best of my knowledge, several of us run DirectX 9 without any problems. What errors messages , you hadn't mentioned messages, just occasional drop outs and switch to SVGA. But you did say a bad word, Soundblaster Live, this sound card has possed many problems with SPWAW for unknown reasons. Although many problems did finally get resolved with driver updates and previous suggestions. Try reinstalling SPWAW over itself, maybe a file didn't register properly.

Driver Updates

Post by gidogrobber »

Now I've updated all drivers, reinstalled SPWaW, but still have errors and drop outs.

Error reports:

BCCode:A BCP1:00CFF32E BCP2:000000FF BCP3: 00000001
BCP4: 804DA94D OSVER: 5_1_2600 SP:1_0 Product 256_1

with all the reports, its constant, only with a few different nums in
BCP 1 and 2.....

Before I went and reinstalled SPWaW but after I updated the sound and graphics cards, ! had the logest game to date, 7 turns, before it crashed. Sometimes it crashes in the opening screen.

What version of Nvidia drivers are you running. These errors point to a video problem, but these codes usually point to ATI Radeon problem not Nvidia. Do you run Nview from the Nvidia drivers. Do you have any joystick programs loading with windows. What version of DirectX are yor running 9.0 or the latest 9.0a????? Open your device manager and make sure your not showing multiple installs of such things as soundcards, joystick ports, video cards. Lets also make sure DirectX is functioning properly to, go to the run box from the start button and type dxdiag. Perform all test within to make sure all your device are running DirtectX properly.

Hey Gmenfan, I do appreciate the help you're giving me.
*I went and double checked device manager but found no multiple installs. There are quite a few things running under
Task manager but I'm unsure of which I can exit without causing instability in the system.

NVIDIA driver 4.2.3.0
Just Directx 9.0

No problem. Try updating Nvidia drivers to the latest 43.45. It can't hurt. Does the DXdiag pass all tests?
In the run box type msconfig, then click startup tab and give me a list of programs that are starting with windows, the boxes that have check marks in them is all I need. Maybe we can eliminate things starting that aren't needed. Also DirectX has been updated to 9.0a if you want to try it. Another thing we can try is running the game in compatibility mode. Find the file C:\MatrixGames\Steel Panthers World at War\mech.exe. Right click on it and choose properties, then select compatibilty, check the box for Compatibility mode and select Windows 98/Windows ME. Let me know how things go.

Try unchecking the CTHelper.exe file in the startup tab in msconfig. This is a helper application installed with the SoundBlaster software that is used only if you have WinDVD. I have read other posts on forums where this file pegs out CPU usage in certain apps and games. If this fixs the issue and you do not use WinDVD, I would edit the entries for cthelper.exe out of the registry file or download the latest driver pack from February and see if that fixs it.

getting there

Post by gidogrobber »

Hey Mustang,
Thanks that helped some, now the system doesn't shut down and resart now. The game just drops, and I'm still up and running on desktop. I consider that a big step in the right direction, but under task manager, it still shows 98-99% CPU Usage.

I seem to keep dropping at the same point every time. during the enemy's movement and fire.

Ok now disable DirectCD and Nwiz.exe. Nwiz is a from Nvidia that installs unecessary tools for monitor control unless your running multiple monitors. DirectCD is a program that allows you to drag and drop files right to a CD if you wanted too. I had asked if you we're running DirectCD and your silence was telling me no. Don't give up
