Old Man Eyes

Gary Grigsby’s War in the West 1943-45 is the most ambitious and detailed computer wargame on the Western Front of World War II ever made. Starting with the Summer 1943 invasions of Sicily and Italy and proceeding through the invasions of France and the drive into Germany, War in the West brings you all the Allied campaigns in Western Europe and the capability to re-fight the Western Front according to your plan.

Old Man Eyes

Post by jhdeerslayer »

Must say I'm enjoying getting back into a good old fashion monster game and as I'm learning can sense the well polished game you all put together here. The guides and all are marvelous and easing my re-entry. Not a show stopper for me but I have a 27" monitor in 2560 x 1440 mode and the numerous popup texts are just a tad small even with my old man reading glasses. So just checking if there are any .exe switches or anything that increase text size I may have missed?

Check out the Editor Manual section 7.2 - I'm not sure which font is used for pop ups but I'd try #4 or #8.

Great thanks! Never would have thought to look in the Editor but makes sense. I'll play around with it.

I know what you mean... [:)]

To change the Font, it's not in the Editor itself. Look at Chapter 7 in the Editor Manual. You can change the Font on a variety of screens by modifying the witwFontConfig.txt file in the \dat folder by copying and pasting using Notepad. It also says the alignment of the information may be affected so try to increase it a little at a time.

I haven't tried it yet but will soon.

I too have old man eyes and I had a 27” monitor for years, but about 2 years ago I made the leap to a 34” and it made a huge difference. I used to have my DPI setting set at 120% with the 27” and I can now run it on normal for most things, though I occasionally still have to crank it up for some games like the AGEOD titles which have those teeny tiny fonts. Costs on monitors have come down a lot over the years, so perhaps think about getting yourself an early Xmas present to go with the game.

The file "WitwFontConfig.txt" contains the fonts and sizes, and it even includes embedded explanations.

I had already done some fiddling with fonts in WITE, and I found that I could paste the relevant lines from its config into the appropriate lines in the WITW file.

YMMV, so back up your original file. I might still fiddle with these a bit, but they are more pleasing to me than stock. (I'm glad Matrix made modding so easy!)

In "WitwFontConfig.txt" in the numbered list of fonts at the end, I replaced lines 1 through 9 with this text:

1,Arial,12,0
2,Arial,8,0
3,Arial,18,0
4,Verdana,7,0
5,Verdana,8,1
6,Verdana,7,0
7,Georgia,18,0
8,Verdana,6,1
9,Verdana,9,0

The custom fonts discussion for WITE is here. I imagine it's all still relevant.

Yes - the system is essentially the same but is expanded to include additional functionality like the map text.

A bit off-topic, but do you think modders could find a way to squeeze both Combat/movement data *and* unit IDs onto the same counter at the same time? I'm not volunteering, mind you! I have pretty limited experience modding wargames (though I have modded other sorts of games).

No - it's a great idea but that would need a change to the hardcode.

Not sure how you'd really fit it in to be honest, perhaps if it were an additional option instead of the unit stats.

No worries - it's not a high priority thing for me, more of a preference for historical flavor. The information is already available with a simple touch of the Y key (I think).

I think I've been a bit spoiled by the high-zoom, high-resolution levels in MWIF. Yummy unit counters with both combat data and unit IDs. :)

I have the same problem. I've been dinging games for small font for a year. Paradox is the worst offender.

Looks to be # 6 and I just bumped it from Tahoma 8 to 9 and helped a bit without messing up other screens. For the record I'm 53 so not so old...

My $800 Dell UltraSharp 27" was a big enough sell with the "boss" :-) But 34" does sounds cool...
