Map size

Post by jungelsj_slith »

Looking to make my first map - the guides I've read here specify maps of only 3809 Pixels wide and 2856 pixels tall." Is this truly the only map size that can be built? The map I'm looking to build is very narrow and tall. Looking through the scenario editor, it does indeed seem that every map is one specific size.

We set a standard size for Red Storm, but other maps of both smaller and larger sizes exist from user content. We are also working some bigger maps for future use. The trick is to get the scaling correct and the location of the upper left hex so the game uses the map correctly.

Thanks, good to know! So what's the math for pixels per hex, left to right? (If I'm lining up the upper right hex)

Sorry, upper left hex is the start point. Post workout brain fade. Check Mod Guide 1 for the scaling particulars.

Thanks, I think I have a background image in hexdraw now that's roughly correct. FWIW, the wording on this was a little confusing -

Our maps are scaled at 64 pixels per 500m, hexside to hexside.
o The Stand Map is 46 hex columns wide by 30.5 hex rows tall.
By the numbers (for you math types)
• 46 hexes wide works out to approximately 2571 pixels or 20086 meters.
• 30.5 hexes tall works out to approximately 1952 pixels or 15250 meters.

It mentions 64 pixels side to side, but it should actually be 64 pixels in height, not width, right? 46 hexes side to side working out to 2571 pixels means they're something like 55.8 pixels wide.

*EDIT - Oh blah, I'm an idiot. 64 pixels is the literal "Hexside to hexside", not corner to corner when you're going left to right. Nevermind!

A map size of 115x64 hexes gives no problems, if you go wider there is a problem with reading the .png.
But this is a very big map.

As wide of the hex I use (55.42px * NrOfHex + 18.5px) (the extra 18.5px is needed to prevent a truncate of the last hex).

Map size seems to be literally limited to the computing power of your machine's processor. The reason the maps are the size they are in the game is because those run without problems.

Will a 65 wide by 21.5 tall map work, either in this version or the next game? I'm looking to use the old ASSAULT mapsheets, end to end, if it works.

You should be able to do that now. The 2.0.10 update will fix a bug with the jump map for certain map aspect ratios, but other than that you can do it.
