You don't have to save anything, that's the reason. The game has the situation saved every turn, and keep also the 3 previous turns of each ongoing game. Plus once you click on end turn, your orders are also all saved, in case of. You can save your orders mid-course with a button at the top right of the interface also, if interrupted (by the cat or any IRL event ;) )

The problem is it doesnt keep the mid turn save though. Also my game doesnt seem to keep the three previous turns. They are spread out quite randomly/

That's very weird, the system has not changed for many games and we don't have any issue opened on that. Perhaps your Windows is locking some files though, what is the system you use?
