Ordnance ammunition?

Post by happyloaf »

I'm doing the second training mission and have a few questions.

1. Do I only get one use (until ROF runs out) of the ordnance gun? After I fire it and lose ROF it says I'm out of ammo. Is there a way to get more or see how many rounds of ammo the gun has?

2. On the setup phase at the top of the map are three USA hexes that have arrows and are labeled 1,2,3. What are these hexes?

1. You can use the Ordnance Gun every Fire Segment until you run out of ROF. The Gun can also be supplied with different kind of Ammunition like AP, HE, APDS. In the US M1 57 case it was mainly supplied with Armour Piercing but was also supplied with a limited amount of British HE and APDS. The AP and APDS will only be useful in training scenario 4 when AFVs enter the scene so the limited supply will only be in use during training scenario 2. When the Gun has used up the supplied HE it cannot fire anymore during scenario 2, this is determined randomly but should in some way reflect the supplied amount.

2. Those hexes are Setup Zones for the Americans. These are not used until scenario 4 when 3 three US M4 Shermans enters the scenario in Turn 4. They have to enter the scenario and setup in those three hexes.

Is there a way to double the scenario ammunition? I have tried it 5 times now and I can only get one ROF out of the gun. This makes it hard/impossible to really see how ordnance is used? Also, could the scenario description be updated to explain that ordnance has a random amount of ammo and there is no way to tell when/if it will run out?

Sorry there is no way to double the amount of ammunition.

Good idea about the scenario description. I will take a look at this. Thanks.

I think the problem is with it stating that the gun is "out of ammunition". It's not out of ammunition, it has simply exhausted its rate of fire for that phase/turn.

No, it is out of HE ammunition. It still has AP but that is useless against Infantry. It is an Anti Tank Gun.

If it looses ROF the Game tells you this.

"It still has AP but that is useless against Infantry. It is an Anti Tank Gun."

I would like to see this changed. In ASLSK (I know it this is not ASL) when a gun runs out of HE
it will fire its AP using the 1 or 2 IFT column depending on the size of the gun. This at least
keeps the gun relevant. I have seen scenarios that are heavy in infantry where a gun loses it HE
on the first turn and then sits and does nothing the rest of the game.

I agree, and I would also like to have HE rounds having some - limited - effect on AFVs. I don't expect to kill an IS-2m with a 75mm infantry gun, but a T-60 would be another matter...

@ happyloaf:

As a rule of thumb, specialised weapons will have a very limited ammo not dedicated to their primary purpose. Anti-tank weapons - e.g. AT Guns, M10 GMC, JgPz IV, Marder - will have few HE rounds, Infantry support weapons (e.g. Inf/Art Guns, early Pz IV, StuG III B, M8 HMC) will have few AP or HEAT rounds. This is especially true for vehicles having limited ammo supply on board.

Don't waste ammo on low-probability shots, as it is very probable you only will be able to fire only once or twice before running out of ammo.

Specialised anti-tank rounds (APCR, APDS) are usually a bit more common, but even in this case, don't fire a 57mm APDS round on a Sd Kfz 222 (especially if you know there are large felines on the hunt - pun intended [:D]).

AP or HE, is what Peter can implement this?
