Lvov pocket still alive. Two annoying mountain divisions are invading Hungary. Later in the game three mountain divisions will auto surrender. I have never seen this before.

It looks like he is trying to knock Hungary out of the war by triggering its surrender conditions by capturing a town inside Hungary , but if he does I think all that will happen is that the Frozen Hungarians & the Italian Southeast army group will unfreeze & will be able to be used.

That was my thinking. In the end nothing happened. It was just a diversion.

It's almost like WiTE or WiTE2 needs to be aligned like the old Panzer General or later Slitherine Panzer Corps concept where tac bombers do real damage and level bombers suppress. In this instance level bombers would reduce unit supplies and focus damage on support elements.

Turn 5

Heeresgruppe Nord

He was able to break the pocket with a counterattack which is very annoying. I reseal the pocket but Manstein's Corps has to sit there and wait. I am able to ZOC lock three divisions. I decide at this point to do the right hook because there seems to be nothing south of lake Ilmen. The direct approach to Leningrad is covered with infantry and fortifications.

Turn 5

Heeresgruppe Mitte

I started a little war diary to keep track of things.

In the center I have a Panzer Corps with 48, 49, 39, and 40 MP after HQ buildup. I also have a Panzer Corps with 34, 38, 38, and 25 MP due to the HQ fuel trick. From now on I will do one HQ buildup and one HQ switch every turn in the center until turn 9.

I am able to break through and swing south. This should be enough to dislodge him out of his strong position and keep things moving. Otherwise he risks a major encirclement.

Turn 5

Heeresgruppe Süd

Two small encirclements after he isolated one of my motorized divisions. The goal is to cross the Dnepr at Kremenchug. I also set up everything for the attack on Odessa. I will leave on retreat hex open so that the three divisions in Odessa can't escape.

Currently in pockets

3 airborne
1 sec
8 rifle div
1 cav div
3 tank div
1 mountain div
1 mech div

Some comments about the game

It's our 3rd game. The score is Bozo 2 Stef 0 ... and we played both sides. He is a far better player than me.

Initially, I should have played germans during this 3rd one and we begun this way but bozo asked for a restart after 6 turns. He was able to build a CV50 line on the landbridge! next time I will be more carefull before agreeing for a restart [:D]

His Lvov Pocket was perfect... the best I have seen for a long time. And he kept russian units alive during several turns, delaying their "reborn"

No comment about Odessa, I told Bozo that I found this way of playing gamey.

And it's the first time I hear about an HQ used as fuel tank ... it's obviously very efficient.

I consider this game a loss so it's 2:1. But, honestly, I don't count games.

These are gimmicks that should be fixed. The HQ gas trick can be deadly and is a major flaw of the game. We all know that the logistics system is a mess.

Since you are playing the Axis, this is a clever innovation. Only Soviet players use gimmicks and exploits. [;)]

LOL, I know what you mean.

Odessa isn't really that bad. It's not much different than herding units.

The Soviet player can force the defenders to rout out of Odessa with counter-gamey tactics.

Ahem, I tried to call "gamey" on my pal Bozo on the Odessa tactic. Bad idea, really bad.

Bozo gives spankings, really hard, ow,ow,ow, stop stop, it's not gamey, just herding.

There is nothing new or revelationary about this. It's been possible since release. It's always been possible to gas up HQ's and move them. The devs know it. It compensates for other failings or incapabilities within the logistics system. Remove it? And replace with what? Maybe more trucks or winding back the HQBU nerfs. Fact is the game still favours Ivan, not nearly as much as before though. Thank goodness.

Personally I think the game is as close to balanced as it has ever been (so called gimmicks aside).

Turn 6

Heeresgruppe Nord

I clear the pocket and create another one with two divisions. Instead of pocketing more units I rout most of them. I want nothing to interfere with the right hook which I am now starting. This area is still only lightly defended and I am able to displace several airbases.

Turn 6

Heeresgruppe Mitte

I am able to create a pocket with 12 divisions. His defense to the east is very thin now and his flanks are overprotected. An airborne brigade is surrounded in Mogilev.

Turn 6

Heeresgruppe Süd

My tanks are able to cross at Kremenchug. This is a level 4 town so defensive value of the Panzer division is doubled. HQ buildup around Nikolaev.
