Tool Tip Hide Delay setting not working?

Post by JPJ »

It appears the Tool Tip Hide Delay setting (in Player Options) has no effect.

The explanation says it sets how long the Tool Tip remains shown, in seconds (1-100), before it is hidden. On my screen it remains shown for about 3 seconds regardless of this setting.

Ditto. It seems the Tool Tip Hide delay remains on the default of 3 seconds and can't be set less than that.

Actually it works, but you have to restart the game to see the changes. IIRC it was the same with TOAW III.
The tool tip show setting don`t need the restart I think.

Fired up the game.
Set Tool Tip Hide to 1.
Shut down the game properly all the way to desktop.
Restarted the game.
Opened up the exact same scenario.
Checked Tool Tip Delay. It still said 1.
But it still takes 3 seconds for the tool tip to close.
If I move to another hex it closes immediately but it should do that no matter the delay setting anyway.

Fired up the game.
Set Tool Tip Hide to 30.
Shut down the game properly all the way to desktop.
Restarted the game.
Opened up the exact same scenario.
Checked Tool Tip Delay. It still said 30.
It took about a minute for it to close.

Tool Tip Hide is definitely broken.

That's weird. In my case, as long as I restart the game I can set it to hide in one second, ten or whatever. If I don't restart it doesn't change.
Is this saved to the opart.ini? You may want to check that. Maybe you have another TOAW process runing on the background?

Didn't see the second part you added before responding.
Well, at least you managed to change it [:)] Just tested with 30 sec delay, and it hides exactly at 30 seconds here. So... I have no idea [:D]

FWIW, I have adjusted both the Tool Tip Delay and the Tool Tip Hide settings in a scenario I have been playing, saved, then opened up the same scenario save and the Tool Tip settings worked as I had adjusted them. So, for me, on my system and install, it's working properly.

Sounds like a machine dependent bug. That's not good. I always set the show delay to max because I find the tool tip annoying but that's just me so I would have never noticed. [;)]

Now I understand this: it seems the value you set in the Player Options dialog is written to the Opart 4.ini file as "toolTipHideDelay=X" when TOAW is closed, and read and applied from the .ini file when TOAW is launched next time. (Not on the fly each time you change it, and not when opening/saving/closing a game within TOAW.)

(This also implies that if you change toolTipHideDelay directly in the .ini file while TOAW is open, then the value in the .ini will not be effective immediately and will be overwritten with the value that is still in the Player Options dialog when you close TOAW.)

So, I change Tool Tip Hide delay in Player Options, close TOAW, open TOAW, and the new value is applied.
So far this seems correct.
But see an exception below:

Checked Tool Tip Delay. It still said 30.
It took about a minute for it to close.

Yes, similar cases confirmed here. In rare occasions, I have a tool tip that remains visible twice the time that is set in toolTipHideDelay. But not always on the same spot and in the same situation etc. Can somebody else confirm this and/or help identify the double time Tool Tip?

Also, because tool tip hiding is a Player option, I wonder if it is not desirable to apply this immediately?
